27/03/10         SCRUFC 55, Queens 2nds 0  (Friendly)

A good win over a visiting side that contained spirit, determination and far too many props - eight in all (so that's where they all are). Queens made a minor tactical blunder by giving their huge side nearly an hours warming up drills, before the game, saving us the job of running them around.

They won the toss and elected to play up the hill. We kicked off and they came charging back up with a series of bullocking runs, backed up by aggressive clearing out at the rucks, which took them to the half way line. We tackled well and eventually the ball squirted out at the side of a ruck and was picked up by the lightning quick Griff Griffiths on the wing. He found to his joy, his opposite winger was an eighteen stone prop and as you can imagine, he was easily rounded and we were on the board. Barry slotting the conversion.

Our advantage in the backs meant we looked like scoring each time we got the ball into space. However referee and club friend Trevor McCarthy did his best to keep the contest close, by awarding Queens a constant string of penalties, fourteen in the first half alone, whilst doing an Arsene Wenger with anything going the other way. Frustration mounted on the pitch and the sidelines, but we just about held our cool and the try's eventually started to flow. Denver playing at scrum half was in his element, exploiting the mismatches in pace throughout the afternoon and even (shock Horror) put in a try saving tackle. Must've been due to the larger than usual crowd.

Pint sized Liam Roberts filling in for Dio in the much revered No 7 shirt, had a great game, fearlessly skipping between his much larger opponents, whilst setting up a number of good attacks. Ed Strand ran Amok again and was unstoppable once he got into space, picking up another hat-trick of try's - his third in four games.

The half time whistle came early and after a quick break, we carried on as we'd left off, scoring freely this time up the hill. Our try count had reached nine, when Trevor decided to abandon the game only halfway though the second spell, after a bit of handbags in the forwards. A shame for the disappointed crowd and our subs who barely got a game. But at least we were in the bar early.

The standard frolicking in the bar followed the game. The highlight being Strand senior (Chris & Ed's dad) out "ladding" his lads, by spilling most of his pint, whilst trying to down it on a chair.

Try Scorers this week were

Ed Strand 3, Griff 2, Denver, Liam, Paul Evans, Tom Faulkner.

Conversions

Barry 3, Gary Mitchell 2.

Postscript from Doris Day:-   'According to My Dad (who brought Strand senior) it may be a little while until we see him again..........'

06/03/10             Kettering 3rds 33, SCRUFC 12  (Friendly)

Despite the loss, this was a good performance against a side in top spot two divisions above us. We started the stronger camping in the oppositions' half for the first 15 minutes, but typically, the first break in our defence led to a try as Kettering were quick to swarm on the opportunity.

This pattern followed pretty much for the rest of the game with most of Ketterings' try's coming from deep. We had plenty of possession and made plenty of our own breaks, but we seemed to be out-gunned for speed in most positions and found it hard to turn our breaks into points..

As per usual for this year, we struggled to raise a full front row and had to scrounge a prop from K's. He was a giant bearded vet called "Fish" who had just come along for half a game on the subs bench after a 6 month lay-off (should have known better). Fish was gasping for breath after five minutes and was turning a worrying shade of purple, but to his credit he was still there at the end and the scrum was solid throughout. Cheers Fish!

A solid 5 metre scrum was, indeed, the source of our first try. Doris picking up at the back and making quick yards before putting in Pete Ayres to power through in the corner. We finished the half three tries to one down, but with the wind in our favour in the second half, there was still hope.

Sadly, injuries started to mount up and we were unable to keep Kettering at bay. Skipper Steve Gutsell, playing in what may be his last game of the season, scored our second and final try which was converted by the ever reliable, veteran full back Barry "Dusty Hare" Stuart.

The game ended slightly early when winger Tom Faulkner (playing at hooker) ran face first into the back of Dio's head. As everybody knows Dio is made of Granite so this was not a wise choice by Tom, as he came out with a big gash above his right eye. Claret everywhere. Lucky for Tom, there was a doctor on hand who patched him up with six giant stitches. Whatever happened to spending fours waiting in casualty comparing wounds with other muddy souls. Ahhh the good old days.

27/02/10          SCRUFC 19, Bugbrooke 2nds 10  (League)

Bugbrooke brought strong second team squad to Colworth and gave us a real test. The team was made up of students, colts and a few rugby league converts who had pace and agility all over the field. We started very solidly up the hill but failed to make use of our size and experience. Bugbrooke were given too much possession through indiscipline and our kicked away possession. We found ourselves 10-0 down after 30 mins. Thankfully we changed our tactics and after a series of forward drives, we came back with tries through Mark Furneaux and Pete Ayres, to turn around 14-10 up.

In the second half, the rain hammered down and we struggled to assert our dominance as the penalty count against us mounted along with a sin-binning.

Eventually a good try was rounded off by Denver to give us a cushion, which was carried through to full time. Barry slotted two conversions and the result keeps us at the top of our league with one game left to play. We still have an outside chance of winning, but need other results to go our way.

20/02/10          SCRUFC 72, Milton Keynes 3rds 0  (League)

In another impressive performance, Sharnbrook scored 70+ points for the third week running.. A bumper squad again gave us plenty of options which included lending three players to MK in the 2nd half.

Paul Evans made his return to try and claim back his top try scorers spot with a classy hat- trick. Dio also picked up three tries in an outstanding contribution which saw him involved in just about everything, including another try from a beautifully controlled driving maul. His efforts would normally have earned him Man of the Match in most peoples eyes.

But substitute No 8. Jason Henman made a claim with a remarkable second half contribution. Taking on all seven of the second half kick off returns he made remarkable ground with just about every one of them. His shout of "HENMANS!!" got louder and louder with each return, as his runs became more and more dashing and mazy . At one stage Jason took on the guise of a slalom skier wiggling his hips through the final few poles, as he cut through the hapless defenders. Alas the final kick-off return of the match turned him from hero into zero just like that. As the big call of "HENMANS !!" rang out once again, Jason realised he wasn't going to quite make it, so fashioned an attempted hoof on the volley. It turned out to be air shot as the ball bobbled limply away along with all the glory.. Shame 8o(

Other try's came from Pete Ayres, Griff Griffiths, Barry Stuart and two from Gary Mitchell. Barry added four conversions and prop Josh Dixon added another.

Debutant and young speedster Sam Smith, also had an impressive second half, while Karl Campbell showed his versatility, coming onto the wing and finishing in the front row.

But the main talking point again was Valley-Boy Shaun Wake, who is fast becoming known locally as the Sharnbrook Ashley Cole. He again brought attention and controversy to himself, when being over the line, ball in hand and only needing fall over to score. Instead of diving down in traditional manly fashion, he tried to hand-off the oncoming tackler which lead to him knocking on whilst being tackled. It cost us what could have been a crucial try and completely over-shadowed the try he scored earlier.

13/02/10          SCRUFC 71, Kempston 1sts 0  (Friendly)

Seventy plus points for the second week running - can't be bad !

Well done to Ed for his astonishing six tries to go with his four, in half a game last week. Good brace also from Doris, demonstrating how often opponents will slide off a tackle even after a hard initial hit, if you keep driving AND go in low. (Much better choice than the speculative pass).

06/02/10              SCRUFC 76, Olney 3rds 10  (League)

A great day for rugby looked on the cards with decent weather, home venue, a nice soft pitch with an international to follow. The day didn't disappoint on any counts.
Olney turned up a wee bit late in dribs and drabs and their skipper duly informed us that they had been plundered by the teams above and had no front row. Feeling a bit sorry for them we leant them a player in the shape of 6' 8" bean pole Ollie Miller. A line-out expert with an enormously elongated wingspan. They elected to play him on the wing.
The game kicked off with us playing down the slope and it wasn't long before we started to show our ascendancy. Scrum Half Darren Kerr soon crossed the try line, blasting through the defences with a good body angle, making best use of his bulky frame. Unfortunately the ref didn't allow the try, but a minute later Darren repeated the process and this time it was deemed legal and we were away.
We dominated the half, although Olney defended with great spirit, but in the end could not fend off the sustained pressure. They also had their moments in attack and a break out resulted in a try for none other the loan player Ollie "Twiglett" Miller, out-foxing the Colworth defence with a fly hack to the line.
The half finished with a great move following a clearance kick from Olney. The ball was ran back (by Denver I think) to find brother Warwick still loitering from an earlier line out (great vision that Warwick). He acted as a pivot to feed Spanish lock Luis Gallar, who scored his first ever try in his rugby career. OLE !!!
The second half saw the introduction of Kimbolton's top chef (With a Pirelli Star) Ed Strand, who had been held up due to a party of eight coming in, just as he was about to close the kitchen. (Some people are so inconsiderate). Clearly fired up, Ed scored a hat trick of try's within 7 minutes of the restart, and later added a fourth, along with two conversions.
Other try's were added by Doris x2, Mike Barlow (Stand in Skipper), Shaun "Taffy" Wake and Gary Mitchell. Conversions were added by Gary Mitchell 2 and Barry Stuart 6 who also added a Penalty.
The final twist came from loan player Twiglett, who scored a second baffling try for Olney, with another bit of foot-balling magic. Incredible for a man whose legs make Peter Crouch look like a Dwarf. Perhaps their captain was the master tactician after all.
Congratulations to the referee who kept the game flowing very well, so that everyone left the field completely exhausted.
The apres match ensued with an equally exciting line up with top notch veterans in the shape of Williamson.S., Bowyer.M., Mitchell.M. and Owlie Brown boosting the numbers. The partisan crowd thoroughly enjoyed the England victory and where ruthless with the mockery of lone Welsh supporter Shaun Wake. Shaun did his best to stand up for his countrymen's efforts, but failed hopelessly.

30/01/10        SCRUFC 29, N'ton Mens Own 2nds 15  (League)

Top of the table and undefeated Mens Own 2's where crushed by Sharnbrook's best performance of the season so far. Despite another makeshift front row including Greg Frost making his latest comeback playing at hooker and Warwick playing at prop, we were able to counteract our deficiencies in the scrum with some superb open play. We got battered by Men's Own's forwards in the reverse fixture earlier in the season and were ready for them.

We knocked them back in the tackle and turned over ball all afternoon. Our backs were quick to take advantage of the good supply of ball. Tries came from Centres Paul Evans and Shaun Wake and a superb solo run from Chris "Crazy Boy" Strand who is the brother of Ed "Almost as Crazy as Chris "Crazy Boy" Strand", Strand.

The best try of all, came from a superbly taken driving maul set up around 10 meters out and driven forward in such a slow, steady and controlled manner it left Skipper Steve Gutsall to simply fall over unopposed (after a bit of pushing). This was against a high quality pack who had been dominating the scrums.

Talking of scrums. Hats off to lock Piers King who stood in at prop for around 50 mins and had to drag himself around the field, but still put in some crucial tackles at the end.

We seemed comfortable enough towards the end to get everyone on the field who'd turned up. But things were beginning to get a little tight until Denver made one of his typical mazy runs for half the length of the field before putting Shaun in for his try up the hill. Big sigh of relief in the crowd.

This week we entertain Olney 3rds at home with the International in the clubhouse to follow.

23/01/10       SCRUFC 24, Rushden 2nds 20  (Friendly)

A good result against a strong Rushden 2nds side who are currently on a good run.

We scored a superb try right from the kick off playing up the slope. The kick off was cleanly taken and run hard back into the oppo. The ball was quickly recycled and two further rucks drew in defenders. The ball was swiftly passed through the backs, Paul Evans cut a hole through the defence for an amazing opening score without the opposition getting a hand on the ball. It was eventually the difference between the two sides.

The scrum was in trouble early on, giving us plenty of problems, but a blood injury enabled the introduction of the much revered ex-skipper Matt Webber, who took to the front row task with fire in his nostrils. Normally a lock, Matty didn't take a backward step despite his shoulder popping out of joint and having to be thumped back into place by amateur first aider and fellow ex-captain Mark Furneaux.

Rushden's first half onslaught was withheld with fine tackling across the team. One man dynamo "Dio Antilles" put in countless tackles and ball carries, as he does so week in week out. The game remained closely fought throughout, but the win was thoroughly deserved.

Paul Evans added another try along with Gary Mitchell. Barry the boot added 3 conversions and a penalty.

16/01/09      SCRUFC 5, O. Northamptonians 4ths 33  (League)

For the fourth time this season, we faced the team made up of players from a higher team. This time ON's 1st team game was cancelled.

Despite having a lot of regulars missing and the scrum going backwards all game, this was a battling and courageous (if not inspired performance) with plenty of positives. Ed Strand scored a dazzling solo try, cutting through in the centres and out-sprinting the defence.

Games on 19/12/09, 02/01/10 & 09/01/10 were lost to the weather.

12/12/09           SCRUFC 17, Beds Ath 3rds 0    (Friendly)

After the drubbing we took last week at the hands of Peterborough Lions 2nds, this was a vastly improved performance against a side from the division above us. The forwards dominated from the start in most areas, but especially in the Scrum. Jamma Lawrence returned from a long injury lay off and added much needed solidity.

Our first try up the hill came from a driving maul from the forwards and was a beauty. The ball was secured at the back of the maul about 15 meters out and aggressive driving took play within 5 meters of the line. At this point our opposition attempted to collapse the maul by pulling it down and dropping men in front of it. But we cleverly slowed the drive down, whilst carefully stepping over the bodies on the floor Then put on a final surge leaving Andy Squires a simple dive over as we crossed the line.

The domination continued for much of the game with David (Doris) Day having a fine game at No 8 making good use of our scrum advantage, carrying strongly from the base, with good support from the back row.

We made a number of good breaks in the backs but weren't able to turn as many of them into scores as we should have done. This was largely due to some good defence form the Ath but included a couple of howling handling errors with the line begging.

Gary Mitchell added a fine try in the second half along with another from Doris and Barry added a single conversion.

Next game is a tough home fixture against Kettering 3rds, who are currently riding high, two divisions above us.

28/11/09     Bugbrooke 2nds 5, SCRUFC 26  (League / Friendly)

SCRUFC consolidated their position at the top of the Courage Merit table with a good win over Bugbrooke 2nds. The league points had already been secured before kick off as Bugbrooke were unable to field a full side. Three players were leant, and although a little late in starting, the game turned out to be very competitive with some good quality rugby from both sides.

Thankfully, our tackling was much improved this week. Gary Mitchell had a good game standing in for Barry at full back and Harry Roberts had his best game of the season so far, playing for the opposition.

All the try's this week came from the backs. Paul Evans crossed the line twice and further scores came from Gary Mitchell and Shaun Wake. Denver kicked three out of four conversions.

Comedy moment of the week was supplied by giant No 8 Andy Harrison, who made such a hash of an attempted kick that he felt obliged to send an apologetic email to the entire squad from in his bath, via his Blackberry.

Oh, how times have changed !

7/11/09       SCRUFC 24, Ampthill 3rds 36  (Friendly)

A rearranged fixture against Ampthill 3rds this week as our league opponents Brackley II's pulled out. Tragically one of their players was amongst the five soldiers killed in Afghanistan last week, and as he also had other family members involved with playing and supporting, they rightly withdrew. A minutes silence in his honour was duly observed prior to kick off.

We made a good fist of things against Ampthill 3rds, who play two divisions above us in the Merit tables. They had a big experienced pack who clearly know each others game and gave our forwards a tough day, as they seemed happy to maul the ball up field, on almost every occasion possible. To our credit, we worked incredibly hard to stop them and did so eventually on most occasions.

We started the game playing down the slope and opened the Scoring early on with a try from Ed Strand. Ampthill levelled just before half time. The second half saw Ampthill dominate with 5 tries, but we kept in the game making the best of our opportunities, hitting back with three tries of our own.
Second half scorers were Dio, Ed Strand and Doris.

Barry landed all four conversions from under the posts.

31/10/09   Milton Keynes 2nd/3rds 10, SCRUFC 20  (League)

Local rivals Milton Keynes were our hosts for this seasons maiden voyage of the legendary Scott Bader minibus, ably steered by stunt driver and anger management trainee, Stevie Dunnett. On board was newly turned forty, birthday boy Gary Mitchell. Still looking youthful, without a grey hair on his head!

After a few minor diversions we arrived for what should have been a fairly comfortable game against division strugglers MK 3rds.

But as it turned out their 2nds didn't have a game this week, so we ended up playing a mixed 2nd/3rd team.

The game kicked off with veteran Darren "Owlie" Brown making his first start of the season and was straight back in the groove, giving the backs some peachy ball to work with. The scrum worked very well as we made a good start in most area's. But tragedy was then to strike for our birthday boy, as something pinged in his leg and his game was over. Gary was soon cheered up though, as individually the coach and all eight subs reminded him that he should expect these things now he was forty.

Doris Day opened the scoring early on and we followed this up with a further try from Shaun Wake after half an hour, both converted by Barry Stuart. But MK began to waken, and hit back with an unconverted try of their own before half time.

The second half saw our hosts come out with new found vigour and they were quickly on the board again with a determined try through their forwards. Thankfully we realised we had a game on our hands and responded well to hold out to the end with a couple of penalties added again by Barry the Boot. Missing with just one (easy) attempt for the day.

Gary's day got better again, as Denver handed him a pretty floral dress with matching high heels and blond wig. He was then subjected to a four pint challenge by a most obnoxious (but friendly) Kiwi\Aussie from MK. Gary completed the challenge (with a little spillage) then spewed most of it back up again. (Early challenge for the honkers bucket).

The magic bus then headed back to Bedford, stopping at Chicheley and the Swan at Bromham. We left the Swan doing the classic old Seven Dwarfs exit. The final stop was The Ship in Bedford. Sadly, being a light-weight myself, I hopped back onto the magic bus for a lift home with psycho Steve with the night just getting going.

I'm sure this story is only half told and that Gary would be grateful of any further material.

24/10/09         SCRUFC 67, Wellingborough OG's 2nds 7  (Friendly)

A comfortable win this week against a spirited OG's 2nd team, who had lost a good few players to their first team at short notice.

Playing down the hill in the first half Sharnbrook opened the scoring early on through a try by centre come flanker Shaun Wake. Further tries followed as they were able to exploit areas in the OG's weakened defence. Other first half scorers were Mike Barlow, Dio, Gary Mitchell, Pete Ayres and finally Ben Boyles making a return visit from his new cockney neighbourhood scored two tries late on.

Playing down the hill in the 2nd half, OG's made a better fist of things and held their own for much of the half, but again Sharnbrook were able to find telling gaps. Veteran prop Steve Walsh in particular made multiple line breaks, ably supported by Dio Antilles. As the half progressed many changes were made. Seventeen year old Scott Binczyk made his debut and made a great start, carrying the ball several times and in the process overtaking his dads entire "Yards Carried" career total for Sharnbrook. OG's finally scored a well deserved try after a long period of possession and territory.

The final quarter saw a first for Colworth as our Puma flyer Dio introduced two more visiting friends\relatives from his homeland in the shape of Centre Nicholas and scrum half Jose. At one stage the three of them combined in a sparkling move up the field that so nearly ended in a try.

Our second half scorers were Dio, Paul Evans (moving ahead in the try count) & Steve Walsh.

The day was finished of with a 3-way double sculls boat race. Colworth v OG's v Argentina. I'm slightly concerned to report that our visitors from Wellingborough won comfortably, followed by Nick & Jose from Argentina, with our duo of Mark Stephenson & skipper Steve Gutsell trailing in last place. Although to be fair to our skipper, the other teams had almost finished before he had started.

Next week we travel to Milton Keynes for our next league encounter, which should see the season's first outing for the infamous and legendary Bugsy Dunnett's works minibus.

17/10/09            Luton 3rds 43, SCRUFC 13  (League)

Well beaten on Saturday by a strong Luton 3rds outfit. The contest was fairly even for the first 20 mins, despite our scrum back peddling hard for much of it. But from then on, we struggled, unable to match Luton up front and slipping off too many tackles.
When we had quality possession, we looked good creating many decent breaks, but good possession was hard to come by as we spent much of the game scavenging for scraps. We worked hard to the end and finally Chris Strand made a typical break form 40 meters out, cutting through defenders to score under the posts.
Barry slotted the conversion to add to his two first half penalties.

Scrum half reserve Darren Kerr, went through many deliberations as to whether he should risk playing with his dodgy knee, injured in training. "Leave it for now" , "No, I think I'm OK", "better not risk it", "I've tried it and it seems fine", "Leave Pete on a bit longer", "get me on. I'm ready"!
He finally made his entrance with 20 mins to go, but alas, 5 mins later he was making his way back, hobbling to the sidelines with a pained expression to match.
"Has the old knee gone then mate" I said as I snuck Pete back on the field again. "No mate, pulled me calf muscle" came the reply.

Silly game really.

And finally this week a bonus quiz for those who weren't there. Guess who got sin binned ???

10/10/09      SCRUFC 24, Stockwood Park 2nds 15 (League)

At last a home game after five weeks on the road!

SCRUFC took on the division leaders with a good squad on a sunny day, tailor made for our game. We started brightly down the slope, showing good attacking intent and nearly scored in the opening minutes through a break from Paul Evans. But Park's defence was resolute and we eventually had to settle for a penalty from Barry the Boot. Unfortunately our desperation to score got the better of us again, as in previous weeks, as a series of penalties against us lost us vital possession and territory at crucial times.

We did score two tries in the half, the first through Ed Strand charging down the right wing evading tacklers and scoring under the posts. The second followed a superb swerving run from Denver from halfway, who sucked in three defenders then popped a perfectly timed pass for Barry to dive over in the corner. Barry converted both tries and with a 12 point personal haul for the half, declared himself too hungover to continue and promptly left the field.

The second half became more of a forwards battle, as Stockwood chose to play a tighter game and were very hard to stop The were effective with rolling mauls and short runs tight to the forwards. But we tackled well, fronted up and always looked dangerous in possession. A pattern seemed to emerge where we would make good breaks up the field only lose possession at vital moments where Stockwood would send us back with some mighty touch-finding kicks.

They took the second half with two tries of their own, to a solitary penalty from our multi tasking prop forward Josh Dixon. We had made several changes in the second half to try to introduce our plentiful bench, but it led to a bit of disruption in certain areas, particularly the scrum. So lumbering lock giant Piers Kings was re-introduced (as a rolling sub) and made an immediate impact driving Park's scrum backwards at a rate of knots. But from the following breakdown, he was sin-binned for not rolling away (lazy boy) and that was the end of his game. Another great tactical move by coach JW falls flat.

At the end of the day, our lead always looked safe as Stockwood finished the game with their final try.

Ian Clements finally made his debut after joining the club for the summer touch rugby and following recovery from a broken finger in pre season training.

Highlight of the day was ex-skipper Mark Furneaux being complimented by the referee for managing to stay on his feet for most of the game (He only played a half).

3/10/09   Old Northamptonians 4ths 10, SCRUFC 43 (League)

Great performance this week full of attacking adventure. Boosted by a big squad Sharnbrook set about this game looking to get the ball wide and look for gaps. The first try came after only five minutes scored out wide by new Boka on the wing Callan Lishman. Barry's conversion attempt failed, when he couldn't locate his kicking tee. Running out of time attempted a drop goal........... which wasn't an attempt to savour.

We continued to attack when we could, but unfortunately our habit of committing silly penalties continued unabated and stifled our desire for open rugby, once again. ON's put up good opposition and made us work hard for our points and deservedly scored two good try's of their own.

But aside form the penalties, there was much to be pleased about, running in seven tries. Paul Evans was back to his best picking up a hat trick in the process. The game also saw our two best tries of the season so far. The first a sweeping attack from our own 22 going through 7 or 8 pairs of hands before touching down under the posts. And the final try of the game was a beauty coming from Prop Josh Dixon, who picked up the ball on the ON's 10 meter line ran towards the defence, chipped over perfectly then re-gathered to beat the full back to score.

Try Scorers: Paul Evans 3, Denver Bennett, Callan Lishman, Josh Dixon

Conversions: Barry "The prop" Stuart 2, Gary Mitchell 2

Next week we take on Stockwood Park 2nds in the League.

26/9/09         Oundle Vets 19, SCRUFC 24 (Friendly)

A hastily re-arranged match this week as St Ives 1sts were unable to raise a side. (Amazingly they were able to field a 2nd team who beat Shelford 4ths 74-7 in a Merit table game).

This was a valiant and determined win again to the Sharnbrook boys against a strong and sizeable Oundle vets outfit. Things didn't look too great at the start again by non appearances from two players leaving just 14 starters.

But we weren't to fussed as Oundle were a genuine vets team, full of gnarly characters. They showed their hand early on with a series of strong drives down the middle, giving our defence a solid test. We preferred to look for quick ball to try and open up our pace advantage, but it wasn't easy as they were also strong in the tackle, looking for any opportunity to munch an isolated player. They took a deserved lead through a good drive, eventually breaking tackles to score under the posts. But Sharnbrook came back with a couple of tries before half time, as they were able to capitalise when they found open spaces on occasions.

The second half didn't start too well when Mike Barlow had to leave the field and the defensive job got harder. Although the bruising game was also taking it's toll on a few of the vets as well. We managed to open the gap further but then Big Andy Harrison took a big hit from Oundle's even bigger no 8. and was left breathless with severely bruised ribs. But defiantly he soldered on, as did Scrum Half Olli Jordan who suffered a blow to his shoulder and had could only help out by covering full back.

Oundle sensed a turnaround and they pulled two scores back, but Sharnbrook held on bravely, and the final whistle was greeted with great relief.

Tries came from Denver, Andy Squires, Callan Lishman and Gary Mitchell. Barry the boot slotted two conversions.

Next week we are back in League action against Old Northamptonians 4ths. Let's hope that everyone who puts themselves down for a game turn's up !

19/9/09                           Olney 3rds 17, SCRUFC 59 (League)

Our first league win of the season against an Olney side that were buoyant after a big win themselves the previous week. We scored nine tries from nine different scorers on a perfect day for running rugby

A strong starting line up saw the introduction of debut prop Harry Roberts and the return of Jamma Lawrence from his exodus in China. With a good line up on the bench as well we looked all set for a fruitful afternoon.

Finally we had a genuine front row and what a difference it made. We even had a quality prop on the bench. We launched into the first scrum driving it backwards at pace, but unfortunately an indiscretion led to a silly penalty and the good work was reversed. Another penalty followed and a trend was now set which lasted most of the first half as a series of more needless penalties saw scrum half Pete Ayres sin binned for a minor offence, as the referee finally lost his patience. Things weren't helped by a high volume of errors.

Olney were first to score with a mazey run from their elusive fly half, but good signs were there as we dominated the set plays, with skipper Steve Gutsell and Dio winning plenty of good line-out ball. We finally got on the board with a well worked try by Dio. This was followed up with Barry Stuart's second try of the season, picking an excellent diagonal running line from outside the 22, and getting good pace from his veteran legs with his ginger locks flowing in the breeze. Steve Gutsell rounded off the half on a positive note cutting through the centres with a neat little show and go, as we turned round at half time up 21-10.

All changed in the second half as our error count dropped along with our penalties and we were able to let our dominance prevail. Six tries came in all from, Mike Barlow, a Penalty try, Paul Evans, Guest Ben Maddison, Shaun Wake and finished off with a superb 70 dash from Pete Ayres.

Barry the boot kicked four conversions and Olli Jordan, making his long awaited return kicked three. All in all a very good week.

However, next week we have a much stiffer test in the shape of St Ives 1sts who play at the same level as Rushden & Biggleswade 1sts.

12/9/09   Northampton Mens Own 2nds 25, SCRUFC 20 (League)

Despite a very impressive performance, S&C went down to a good and well-drilled side that contained a couple of real danger men. For the second week running we had a number of late drop outs and have to thank our opposition for lending us a prop, who turned out to be a pretty useful player. Hooker Andy Squires also had to move to Prop, and winger Tom Faulkner was brought in at hooker. Centre Pete Ayres came in at Scrum Half and had a very good game.

A very narrow pitch meant the game was always going to be a battle of attrition, as was difficult to give our speedy wide men any room. Disaster struck in the first minute, when lock Piers Kings (our biggest player) pulled a calf muscle and had to leave the field, so on came Olli Miller our only sub. But we rolled up our sleeves and battled like Trojans, holding the opposition in their own half for the first ten minutes, despite having little possession. But in their first venture out they scored an excellent try from their more than useful fly half. Another try and penalty followed before half time, although Denver reduced the deficit with a penalty or our own just before half time, leaving us trailing 17-3 at the break.

Mens Own increased their lead with a penalty early in the second half and the game became somewhat deadlocked, with the heat and hard pitch taking it's toll on both sides.

But with 10 mins to go the game suddenly came alive as our efforts were finally rewarded when Chris Strand used his pace and power to find his way through the midfield to take a well deserved try. We were suddenly in the driving seat with our tails up as we sensed our oppo were tired. We added another try through Veteran full back Barry Stuart and the conversion brought us within a score of taking the lead. (18-15 I think). But disaster struck immediately as Mens own scored a try back within seconds of the kick off, but again we came straight back with another Chris Strand try converted by Barry.

The ref called 3 mins left from the final restart and we worked the ball up to half way through a superb break from Denver, rolling back the years once again. The ball was finally worked to danger man Chris Strand who cut through the centres and was left with full back and winger to beat. He made it passed the winger, but the wingers half tackle had slowed him and the full back did just enough to force him into touch and prevent a certain try under the posts, thus ending the game.

Next week we are home to our nearest rivals Olney in the league again. This will be the first time we have played them for four seasons.

05/09/09                           Rushden 2nds 11, SCRUFC 19           (Friendly)

A good start to the season saw a gutsy battling win over a good Rushden 2nds side with plenty of quality.

A somewhat makeshift Sharnbrook side with two borrowed players and three hookers making up the front row took to the field at sunny Rushden. We took a while to get going with Rushden strongest in the opening 10 mins and taking a deserved 3-0 lead. We had to work very hard to defend our line, but in typical fashion our first venture into the Rushden 22 resulted in a try from stand in scrum half Pete Ayres, who brilliantly caught a mis-kicked clearance and only had only a couple of meters to go to make the line. Barry Stuart converted from wide out, but Rushden hit back shortly with a superb penalty from half way leaving the score 7-6 at half time.

The second half saw the introduction of Veteran Scrum half Darren "Owlie" Brown who had only turned up to watch. But he wasted no time in setting up his long term partner Denver with high quality quick ball to get our backs moving. We started to get some width on the ball and good runs from Shaun Wake and Pete Ayres in the centre started to Stretch the Rushden defence. The forwards started to gain momentum and after a good passage of play, Puma flanker Dio Antille cut free from the 22 to score a well earned try to give us some breathing space. Barry again converting.

But the game remained close and Rushden came back with a good try of their own to leave a tense finish. It was wrapped up in the last 10 mins with a superb forwards try, driving a maul from the 22 to the line. Steve Walsh used all of his experience to get hold of the ball in the last couple of meters to finish off a great move. It was rewarding to see something we have worked hard on in training coming off with such aplomb.

Thanks go to Craig Wilde from Cranfield who made up our front row and to Sid from Vauxhall's who filled in at centre.

Young Boka debutante Callan Lishman had a great game on the wing, definitely one to watch for the future. But man of the match was big Andy Harrison who worked tirelessly with several carries and generally put himself about, cleaning up ball and tying in defenders. Top quality donkey work from the man in the girdle.

Our league campaign kicks of next week with an away trip to Northampton Mens Own 2nds.

BEDFORDSHIRE CUP FINAL 18/4/09

S&CRUFC 0 v 27 Stockwood Park

A outstanding effort from the Sharnbrook boys kept them in the final until the last 15 minutes. The 200+ crowd were given plenty to cheer about with a blood and thunder game packed with excitement. Denver, Shaun Wake and Mark Denton all made line breaks in the first half, but it was a testament to Stockwood's defence that they were able to keep us out. Stockwood eventually opened the scoring with a converted try after 25 mins.

Sharnbrook continued to push for a try in the first half, with our heavier pack causing problems for Stockwood in the scrum. Our line out worked well and we were able to disrupt some of the Stockwood ball. But all credit to Stockwood, as their defence was superb. We were able to make inroads through continuous phases, but the ground made was extremely hard work and inevitable turnovers against a very fit side kept us at bay. The spirit and determination of the team was demonstrated twice in the first half, when Stockwood made two break outs from deep in their own half with both looking like certain tries. But they were chased all the way to the line. On the second occasion a brilliant last ditch tackle was made by veteran full back Barry Stuart by pushing his mans foot into touch, as he was diving over for the line.

We turned round at half time just 7-0 down with very little to choose between the sides. We started well in the second half, playing up the slope against the breeze and were able get good territory on occasions, but on each occasion were put back by the huge boot of Stockwood's fly-half. They stretched their lead midway through the second half with two penalties, but we still doggedly pushed for a score that would have brought us back in the game. But we started to tire as some of our veteran legs started to desert us, and with fifteen minutes to go, Stockwood scored a try that finished us off. This followed by another late on.

The boys were rightly proud of their efforts and it was all smiles at the after-game team photo. Comedy moment of the day came from Skipper Mark Furneaux, who wanted to raise a stern point with the referee. Unfortunately Mark had taken a kick to the face earlier in the game and with a bloodied nose and swollen lips, he spoke like the Elephant Man with a bag over his head. The ref had a little trouble in taking him seriously, as he couldn't understand what he was saying. The biggest cheer of the day was for Ed Strand who hit his man with a superb tackle, dumping him (nearly) into the crowd on the halfway line.

Next week we are participating in the Oundle round robin tournament and will be looking to improve on last years third place. The outcome will no doubt depend on whether we open the beer and port on the bus before we get there.

Sharnbrook and Colworth go the season unbeaten in the league!

SCRUFC 46 v 19 Rushden 2nds (league match 04/04/09)

A good win in our last league game of the season against a feisty young Rushden side , apart from their 60 year old prop! This means we have gone the whole season unbeaten in the league.
Colworth started well with a Chris Strand try early on, breaking several tackles soon followed by Mark Denton scoring also breaking through many attempted tackles. Barry converted one for an early 12 - 0 lead. But Rushden soon hit back with a converted score before Chris again went half the length of the pitch after Denver  had drawn the defence in, Chris then completed a first half hatrick with another strong run and a Dio try after another Rushden score completed a good first half for Colworth. Despite Denvers poor kicking including a penalty kick to touch that went backwards!!

The second half saw Colworth take charge again and further tries followed from Steve Judge, Mark Stephenson and Dio with Barry  managing a paltry 3 out of 8 on the conversion front. Rushden also scored again with a fine run from their 12 year old winger dancing round some of us older players. It was a good performance all round and with a rest next week for Easter sets us up nicely for the Cup Final against Stockwood on the 18th.

 LEAGUE MATCH 28/03/09

Bedford Swifts 2nds 7 v 20 SCRUFC

Denver got his hooter re-arranged again, claret everywhere, but he went back on when it had stopped bleeding.

Our tries were scored by Paul Evans, Mark Denton and Ed Strand. Barry added a conversion and Penalty.

Bigglsewade 13 v 18 SCRUFC (Beds Cup Semi-final 21/3/09)

Sharnbrook and Colworth progressed to the final of the Beds Cup with a fantastic performance against Biggleswade. SCRUFC had the perfect start when from the first scrum of the game the ball was quickly moved through the backs out to winger Ed Strand who still had work to do but beat his man on the outside and scored in the corner. The conversion was missed, but 5 up after a few minutes and Biggleswade were rattled. The game was a scrappy affair with the referee never allowing the game to flow giving penalty after to penalty to both sides. Biggleswade had a sustained period of pressure but brilliant defence with not one Colworth player taking a backward step kept them at bay. Half way through the first half Colworth broke out from defence and after working their way up the touchline the ball broke to Chris Stand who beat his man and stepped in off the wing to see a massive gap and he gleefully ran in unopposed to score under the posts, Barry adding the extras. An increasingly frustrated Biggleswade still found no way through resolute defence and eventually settled for a penalty kick on the stroke of half time so Colworth went into the break 12 - 3 up.

Shortly into the second half Biggleswade tempers broke and punches were traded but Mark and Walshy seemed to come off the better although the ref had had enough by now and sent one off from each side with Walshy taking the punishment for SCRUFC. This meant re arranging the front row and Steve came on with Mike having to be subbed. Some great running in the centres from Olly and Mark kept up a constant threat for Colworth but Biggleswade were starting to gain confidence and again after a long period of pressure and with skipper in the sin bin (there's a change) Biggy forced the ball over for a try but missed the conversion. Colworth then had some pressure of their own and a Barry penalty meant we were 15 - 8 up with only 15 minutes to go, A further try from Biggleswade and another penalty from Barry brought the score to 13 -18. A nervy last 5 minutes saw SCRUFC back on the front foot and in the Biggy half when the ref called time and a famous victory was secured.

To say Biggleswade were gutted was an understatement; they had clearly expected to win but our commitment was outstanding and I couldn't really single any player out. To a man everyone tackled and the forwards showed enormous heart and spirit with the backs always looking more dangerous than their opponents.

Apparently Queens or Stockward Park in the final; it would be nice to see as many supporters there as we can muster !!

 LEAGUE MATCH 07/03/09

Stockwood Park 3rds 5 v 27 SCRUFC

Another comfortable league victory against a Stockwood Park side made up from a mixture of Seconds, Thirds, Vets, Colts and a First teamer coming back from injury.

Again we were only able to muster 15, but all willing to die for the cause. Ollie Miller made his debut and Dale Edwards (A colleague of mine who lives nearby) made up the numbers.

It took us a long while to get going as a few passes went astray, but eventually Doris got us on the scoreboard with a converted try, after good work from his chums in the pack. Barry the boot added a penalty a few minutes later, which is only our fourth of the season. Who said the ELV's were killing try's.

Stockwood came back with a try of their own to make the score 10-5 at half time.

We came out for the second half a bit more switched on. Gradually getting the upper hand in the loose and looking threatening each time we had quick ball in the backs. Three second half tries came from centres Steve Judge, guest Dale and Denver at 10, with two cons from Barry Stuart.

The highlight of the game indeed came from veteran full back Barry late on, who retrieved a kick deep in his 22. With a mediocre chase from Stockwood, Barry was able to run the ball fair way back before the first line of defence arrived. He spotted a gap and slipped through it on a diagonal run and found himself in yet more space, just inside half way. He was now keen to ship the ball on but all the nearby support was blocked by defenders, who seemed to be ignoring the (by now) rapidly tiring and panic stricken Barry who by then had reached the opposition 10 metre line still unchallenged. The lack of oxygen and fatigue had now left him feeling nauseous as he plodded on in surreal slow motion with little sign of his agony ending. In a final desperate act, as the 22 came in sight he scuffed a kick forward beckoning others to chase it as he collapsed to the ground exhausted and unable to see his kick being calmly cleared away. So near, so far.

Comedy moment of the day came from eighteen and a half stone utility forward Jamma going into a tackle a little too high on a long armed lock, who got him with a perfectly timed hand-off, dumping him on his arse in the process. It was later reported that seismic alarms had been set off at nearby Luton Airport, but we don't know for sure if they're connected

Man of the match this week goes jointly to centres Judgie and Dale, who cut holes in the oppo defence at will and snuffled out anything else that came back at them.

Next week we are away to Beds Ath Vets\3rds combo.

SCRUFC 41 v 5 Cranfield University (Friendly 28/02/09)

SCRUFC retained their 100% league record with yet another walk over this week. With Kempston 2nds unable to raise a team we were thankful to Cranfield University for stepping in to replace them.

Cranfield provided stern opposition for much of this game, but ran out of steam as we scored three late tries to boost the score. We ran in seven tries in all, but four missed conversions, from stand in kicker Denver Bennett, meant the fifty pointer opportunity was missed.

This friendly match was played in a friendly spirit for most of the game, but did have its moment when centre and ex-copper Stevie Judge got popped by his opposite man shortly after scoring. Steve acted quickly in self defence by throwing approximately twenty-five return blows in the ten second time frame available before it was pulled apart. Think it had something to do with muscle memory learnt in his previous career.

Having been injured since before Xmas, Steve Gutsell turned up to possibly come for a ten minute tester at the end of the game (although he had been on the lash until 6.00am). As is traditional in coarse rugby, due to lack of numbers, Steve had to play the whole game with his hangover and aching shoulder. He thus deserves an award. Not for his actions on the field but for running the bar during the international whilst clearly suffering with serious after effects.

Man of the match was Chris Strand with a hat-trick of tries which came from several searing runs backed up by a number of crunching tackles.

Other try scorers were, Jason Henman, Mark Furneaux, Steve Judge and Olivier Bouzigues. Steve Judge showed how it was done by adding a conversion to Denver's earlier brace.

This week we are due to play Stockwood Park.

 LEAGUE MATCH 21/02/09

SCRUFC 34 v 10 Dunstablians 4ths

The taste of league victory came back to Sharnbrook on Saturday with a good win over a decent Dunstable side. The growing injury list was extended in the week with skipper Mark Furneaux pulling his back on Friday whilst sitting on the floor. After a lot of scratching around, we just managed to pull together a bare 15, from which we had no scrum half or any specialist front rows. Matt Webber and Jamma stepped up to prop but it was left to hero Howard Bullough to occupy the hookers birth. Despite the scrum going backwards for most of the game we dealt with our own ball very well and Howard even took one against the head at the end of the game.

The game was precluded by the farce of trying to find someone to throw the ball into the line out. After comedy attempts by several forwards it was decided that Mike Barlow should throw in and we should aim all our line outs to the front. It seemed to work ok as we held our own and set up some good ball for our backs to work with.

Dunstable brought with them a huge side both in the scrum and outside.Their giant scrum half caused us a lot of problems initially, but Dio soon got to grips with him and was able to bring him down before too much damage could be done.

It was clear from the outset that our advantage lay out wide and we needed to move the ball around and use our speedy backs to find holes in their defence. This was achieved with aplomb for most of the game, as once the ball was away from the set piece we were quicker in the loose and our backs always looked dangerous with quick ball. Hats off to the forwards who had to work very hard all day, particularly in the scrums, but still found the energy to get round the pitch to secure ball and put the tackles in on their big players.

We started the game up hill and opened the scoring after 15 mins with a well worked try on the left flank through Dave Judge, playing his first game back since September after returning from paternity leave and the huntin' season. A further first half try was added, but D's struck back to leave the half time score at 10-5. We knew that with the slope and breeze advantage in the second half, that the game would be ours if we kept up the work rate. Four second half tries were added as we were able to play a more expansive game and our backs cut loose. D's showed what could have been in the last 10 mins, as they were able to keep the ball tight and had a lot of possession, scoring a consolation try in the process.

Steve Judge was back in his favoured position in the centre and scored two tries, Ed Strand, his partner in the centres got on the score sheet as did Doris. Veteran Barry Stuart popped in for a rare try from full back as if to make up for his "D minus" grade day with the boot securing only two out of 6 conversions and missing a simple penalty in front of the posts.

Pete Ayres had a superb game, standing in at scrum half and looks to be the answer to our long standing problem there. Mark Stephenson (also making a comeback) had the best game of his life and Jason Henman had a great game in the back row. But the Man of the Match has to go to Howie at hooker. Taking all his own ball, with only a five minute coaching session, pinching one against the head and he turned up everywhere in the loose.

This was a classic game where the forward battle decided who won and the backs battle decided by how much. The forwards dragged themselves off the field claiming a close but well earned victory, with the backs buzzing from a polished performance.

Next week we have our third encounter of the season with Kempston.

FRIENDLY 31/01/09

ON's 2nds 35 v 0 SCRUFC

We started the game brightly and were unlucky not to score first, when the lively Chris Strand just put a foot in touch whilst crossing the try line. But the stronger ON's pack gradually found holes in our defence and despite some valiant tackling and they took control of the game. Newcomer Steve Walsh had a great game, stealing a lot of opposition ball, but unfortunately we weren't able to break many holes in the ON's defence to take any advantage.

SCRUFC 14 v 65 Kettering 3rds

Our unbeaten record for the season came crashing down on Saturday against a side from Kettering which were billed as their 3rds.

They were far to good for us and scored eleven tries to our two. After a dreadful start, we battled really well and scored two good tries of our own through Paul Evans and Steve Judge.

KETTERING MATCH REPORT 24/01/09

The 3rds won convincingly at Sharnbrook and Colworth, in an excellent game, with both sides contributing to the enjoyable feast of rugby, whilst the Colts, who were the only other side to survive the weather, won a really tight contest 6-3, at home against Luctonians, in a game played in extremely difficult conditions. The Blues points coming from the boot of Bruce Keir.

  FRIENDLY 17/01/09

Brackley 2nds 19 v 26 SCRUFC

A feisty affair at Brackley against a young team who battled well, but who weren't afraid to use the odd underhand tactic.

We had a strong but slightly unbalanced squad containing 7 backs and 13 forwards. We were missing a few of our regular backs, but it didn't seem to matter, as our forwards battered the lighter opposition from the start. We had pulled out a comfortably lead by half time. But in an attempt to give everyone a fair game, we rotated players, and unfortunately the tactic backfired dramatically, as the forwards became disjointed and we started to make a series of uncharacteristic errors. We arrived for line outs and scrums not sure of who was doing what and big holes started appearing in our defence.

This allowed are oppo to get a fair bit of ball and we discovered that they actually had some good quality backs who made good of the their possession, scoring three tries. Things got worse as Denver had to leave the field injured early in the second half. This was compounded when the scrums (which we were dominating) had to go uncontested as one of their front row felt too "poorly" to continue.

We were on the back foot and had to defend hard. Mark Denton and guest Olli, put in some great tackles to preserve our lead, but as the game neared its climax another punch-up ensued as a result of some serious footwork used on Barry Stuart whilst he was on the ground. It was agreed that the game had run its course and was concluded 10 mins early.

Our tries this week came from Andy Harrison, Doris, Denver and Mike Barlow. Barry added three conversions.

  LEAGUE MATCH 20/12/08

Daventry 3rds 3 v 29 SCRUFC

This was one of those games where the scoreline didn't reflect how close the game was, or the hard fought manner in which the win was achieved. Chris Strand completed a hat-trick, with two tries late on to complete a clean sweep of 15 wins for the first half of the season. Until the last 10 mins the game was still anyone's for the taking.

Unfortunately we had a few key players unavailable and we had three players drop out on the day of the game. This lead to a fair bit of reshuffling and we had to be thankful to Dio for bringing a couple of players from Cranfield University. Lock Louis (from Spain) playing only his third ever game of rugby had a superb game as our lead line out jumper even stealing a few opposition balls as the game went on. Tom came on in the second half to replace Paul Evans (who was struggling with an ankle problem) and did a great job with some impressive runs. We had three other players making their debuts and had to press gang Bling Faulkner into a baptism of fire at Hooker, having only started his playing career this season as a winger. Must commend Bling for his heroic efforts, as the scrum was going backwards most of the day. He stuck to his task and we managed to come out of the scrums fairly well all-in-all. As the game went on his head was getting lower and lower (physically not metaphorically) and he must be nursing a jolly stiff neck this morning.
The pitch was a quagmire and was on the small side, so it was difficult for us to use our advantage in the backs. The game was pretty even in the loose and our opposition had plenty of ball to attack with.

So where did our advantage come from I hear you asking ? Well, quite simply, it was in the tackle. Our defence was superb throughout the game. The commitment from the whole team never wavered, but the back row of Dio, Mark Ferneaux, Doris & Pete Ayres (interchanging in the second row), were incredible. Dio summed it up, at one point making three big tackles in the space of a minute. This was the key to our success.

Our efforts in the forwards eventually lead to spaces being created in the midfield and our sizzling backs were able to show their class, scoring all five of the tries. As well as Chris Strand's hat-trick, Barry Stuart, playing at 10 this week got a try and added two conversions. And finally, try machine Ben Boyles got yet another try to finish his season, as he is now off on a round the world trip (alright for some). We hope to see Ben back again soon after his trip, as he has been great to have around.

Big thanks to Steve Dunnett who drove his works mini-bus, as well as coming out of retirement to play. I've not yet heard any stories from the trip yet, other than from hat-trick hero Chris Strand who left his kit on the bus with his car keys in it. He lives in Kimbolton, his car's parked in Sharnbrook and his kit's in the minibus in Northampton.

If there are any more interesting stories from the journey home out there, I'm sure everyone will be interested to hear.

Next rugby action is a home League game against Vauxhall on Jan 3rd 2009.

Christmas Cheers to all.

Jim Wingfield (Coach)

SCRUFC 17 v 14 Beds Ath (13/12/08)

A gritty, determined performance against a good Ath side containing a mix of seasoned vets, with the odd first teamer also thrown in.

The heavy conditions thwarted our usual free flowing game as we were forced to slug it out with the big and experienced Ath pack. Ath opened the scoring after 15 mins with a superbly taken interception try by Rob Robinson. Rob played first team Ath in the early eighty's and must now be approaching 50, but he showed he still has great pace, as he completed a 50 metre up hill sprint to the line.

We hit back about 10 mins later with a well worked move that saw Mark Fowler break through the Ath midfield to bring the scores back level.

With the conditions worsening, the second half became a battle of attrition, with both sides putting up resolute defences. We were forced to defend our line for long periods, which we did with great determination, although the Ath were perhaps unlucky not to be awarded a try when they grounded ball on the line which was spotted by everyone except the ref. Our second try was a beauty. The forwards battled their way up hill, took the play to the left sucking in many defenders, then releasing the ball through the backs for winger Adrian Smith to score in the corner.

The final try was equally special and came from a defensive break out by the elusive Chris Strand, followed by a bit of magic from the old maestro himself Denver, spotting a couple of slower defenders to run round and then cutting back inside to leave himself with a race to the line. The Ath pulled back a try near the end, but our defence held out, to complete another win to extend the record to Fourteen.

The apres rugby was top class, the Ath Choir of Chris Rand, Newell Brothers Spider & Money, and occasional inserts from Stu MacAskill provided priceless entertainment.

On behalf of the players, I would like to say a special thanks to all those who helped with the organisation and to all the VP's and supporters who turned out to watch the game and enjoy the festivities.

 LEAGUE MATCH 6/12/08

SCRUFC 95 v 7 Leighton Buzzard 4ths

Another great day for the boys in Green & Black as the unbeaten record was extended with a fifteen try demolishment of Buzzards 4ths making it thirteen wins in a row.

Disarray in the changing rooms precluded the start of the game though, as only two front rowers were available in the shape of Stevie Dunnett & Warwick. Volunteers to slot in were distinctly lacking and the day was only saved by Stevie D. getting his pal Steve Walsh to zoom down from Rushden and help out. His pal turned out to be quite useful as it happened and bagged himself a hat-trick of tries. Sadly Stevie D. went home with none.

Young Simon Dempsey made his debut at scrum half, growing in confidence as the game went on. Denver had to re-familiarise himself with passes coming to hand instead of foot or on the bounce.

It didn't take long for us to get going with the Paul Evans opening the scoring after a couple of minutes. Barry just missed the conversion, which turned out to be significant as from the restart Buzzard worked an opening and streaked in for an equalising try with the conversion putting them ahead. The first time Sharnbrook had been behind all season. The deficit didn't last long as the big boys in the pack took control with a series of midfield charges, setting up plenty of ball for the backs to let rip. The big boys were the greedy boys this week, hanging on to the ball enough to help themselves to ten tries. Paul Evans got a hat-trick for the backs with Denver and Ed Strand getting the others. Barry the boot made up for his mediocre start slotting ten conversions in all.

Try Scorers were Paul Evans 3, Steve Walsh 3, Mike Barlow 2, Mark Ferneaux 2, Pete Ayres, Dio, Doris, Denver & Ed Strand.

As you all know, next week is of course VP's day combined with a birthday celebration for Barry Beever. We are playing the Ath Vets, who are putting out an "All-Star" team including legend Paul McGuckian in their line up. It would be great to roll out a few of our own blasts from the past. Duncan, Geoff, Blocks, Sooty, Micky, Pete R, Steve W,etc, etc. You know who you are. Please let me know if you would like to (or are willing to) come on for a 10 or 20 min cameo slot, to ensure the event will carry enough sporting memories to last Barry to the end of his days.

Cranfield 5 v 59 SCRUFC (22/11/08)

SCRUFC's winning start to the season marched on, with our twelfth win in a row, following victory in a friendly with Cranfield University. Cranfield were ferocious in the tackle and committed at the breakdowns, but were no match for our organisation, technique and power.

Nine tries were scored with seven conversions.

We have now scored 591 points for the season so far, which is more than we scored in the entire 07/08 season. Only 62 points have been conceded.

Try Scorers this week were

Ben Boyles x3, Denver Bennett, Howard Bullough, Olivier Bouzigues, Stacey (on loan from Queens), Steve Gutsell, Tom Faulkner.

Our victory joy soon evaporated and turned into despair in the clubhouse afterwards as the debacle at Twickenham unfolded.

BEDFORDSHIRE CUP 15/11/08

SCRUFC 52 v 5 Kempston

Another hard fought win saw us through to the Semi-finals of the Beds cup, where we'll meet either Biggleswade or Vauxhall.

Despite the scoreline, Kempston gave us a good run for our money this week, keeping the game close at a try each until a few minutes before half time. We looked like we might take just a slender lead into the break, but finally broke through scoring two tries just before half time - score 17-5.

With a comfortable lead and the slope to assist, we set about our business in the second half with aplomb. We now dominated in the loose and in the line out, although the scrum was still a bit hit and miss. Our fitness was a telling factor and by being first to the breakdown were able to turn over ball regularly. We started using the pick and drive to great effect. Our quest for a scrum half continued, with it being Shaun Wake's turn this week to "give it a go". As expected, Shaun was great in defence and made some super runs, picking up in the loose. But the damp conditions made passing a bit tricky and Denver at fly-half (never one to be shy on offering constructive criticism) reminded Shaun that he wasn't playing Flat Green Bowling and that it was legitimate for him to pass the ball through the air if he wanted to give it a go.

The highlight of the game was a catch and drive from an attacking line out from just outside the oppositions 22. We set up a "running maul" amongst desperate cries of "Bring it down" from our oppo. We took it to within a few feet of the line, but it was tragically stopped just short..

Our backs were classy again, running in six of our eight tries. Gallic import Ollivier Bouzigues scored his first try for the club. Debutants Jon Steele and Jay Ingram both made an impact coming on in the second half. Steve Judge was back from his long lay off with his menagerie of exotic virus's and infections. He did what he did best scoring two tries, but had to be replaced ten minutes into the second half, after looking near to death.

Barry Stuart showed Cipriani how it was done with the boot, converting six out of eight.

Try Scorers were

Steve Judge 2, Doris 2, Ben Boyles 2, Denver & Ollivier.

This week we have an early kick-off against Cranfield College. A scratch side with a mixture of junior internationals and novices, should make an interesting game.

 LEAGUE MATCH 8/11/08

Rushden 2nds 3 v 44 SCRUFC

Nothing for me to grumble at this week, after a much improved performance against a combative Rushden II's side. :o)

A slight mix up over kick-off time meant we started the game with fourteen players. Rushden started very well and given their recent results were a lot stronger than expected. They dominated the first ten minutes, playing very well but were helped by the referee awarding them a series of bizarre penalties. But our defence was determined and it was a great credit to us that we held out. When we finally won the ball (without being penalised), Denver sent a searing kick down wind and down hill, which their full back made an awful hash of, finally allowing his return kick to be charged down by Ben Boyles. The ensuing free ball was collected by Howie (I think) which was jogged in for our opening try. Our second try followed shortly after.

But Rushden continued to pressurise, as the ref's decisions became more bizarre, finally Sin Binning Andy Harrison for going to ground in the contact area (He made the tackle that created the contact.). He was followed into the Sin Bin a few minutes later by Skipper Mark Furneaux, which left us with 13. But despite our depleted numbers, we more than held our own and started showing signs of things to come for the remainder of the half.
Rushden started the second half well and scored an early penalty. But the biggest change came from the ref, who finally allowed us to play, and from here on in we took control scoring five further tries. The forwards drove hard and set up great quality ball to allow the backs to run riot, cleverly exploiting Rushden's weakness out wide. Six of this weeks seven tries came from the backs, five if them from the back three.

Scorers this week were. Howie 2, Ben 2, Bling, Dio & Mark Fowler. Denver notched over 3 cons and a pen.
Andy Squires did a great job filling in at Scrum Half, debutant Springbok Prop Stefan also had a great game, but had to come off near the end with a dislocated shoulder. Alarmingly, he asked me to help him put it back in. The procedure consisted of him sitting in a chair, with me putting my knee under his arm pit, then helping him wind his arm around once and hey presto and to the amazement of the on looking crowd, it popped back in, clean as a whistle. A bystander then asked me if I'd look at his piles, but that was enough ER for me, for one day.

A great afternoon all in all, securing our tenth win of the season and maintaining our winning run, still top of the Waggledance. Next Saturday we entertain Kempston in the Beds cup with a Twelve O'clock kick off, followed by watching the England game at the Sharnbook club.

 LEAGUE MATCH 1/11/08

SCRUFC 46 v 12 Daventry 3rds

SCRUFC's winning run was extended to nine in a row, with a comfortable league win over Daventry III's. But despite the scoreline, this was not a vintage performance.

On a windy day, the game was punctuated by fits and starts. We clearly had the stronger pack and we were able to punch holes in the Daventry defence at will throughout the game. But the support play was not up to the usual high standards shown in recent weeks and we threw away advantages on too many occasions trying to force through off-loads, when they weren't really on. In the end, our physicality was simply too much for the Daventry defence to handle, with most of our tries scored being scored by strong runners breaking tackles.

Tries came from

Warwick, Mark Furneaux (2), Mike Barlow, Doris (2),Denver & Ed Strand. Barry notched 3 out of 8 conversions.

Next week we travel to Rushden II's for another League encounter.

LEAGUE MATCH 18/10/08

Vauxhall 2nds/1sts 0 v 24 SCRUFC

The winning run continued on Saturday with a hard fought league victory over Vauxhall 2nds. The game was made more interesting by Vauxhall putting out a mixed side, as their 1sts didn't have a game. It took us a good 20 minutes to break Vauxhall down, the first score coming from try-machine Steve Judge. It followed quick thinking by stand in scrum half Denver taking a tapped penalty having spotted room out wide. Swift hands through the centre's left Steve one-on-one with his opposite winger and standard procedures followed. Barry slotted a beautiful conversion from out wide.

We tried to play our favoured style of open attacking play, but unfortunately couldn't. Vauxhall's have the narrowest pitch in the civilised world and the Referee (knowing that he had an assessor on the sidelines) decided to blow up for every infringement in the book at every possible opportunity. Very frustrating for both sides. On three occasions in quick succession in the first half, he brought us back to award us penalties when we had broken through the gain line and looked like scoring.

Vauxhall on the other hand had a very one dimensional game, electing to use their big first team centre combination to try and bulldoze their way through on every occasion. Full credit to Shaun Wake and Paul Evans opposite them who tackled them all afternoon and effectively snuffed out their only option. They only came close to scoring on one occasion other than through penalty kicks.

We were awarded a penalty try towards the end of the first half and scored a further try in the second half thanks to a superb charge down by Steve Gutsell, allowing Dio to pounce on the rebound. Barry converted again from out wide, returning a 100% record for the day. 3 cons, 1 pen. Top banana !

The forwards won the battle in the loose and line out, and the scrum held it's own again despite our continuing prop famine. Paul Stuart, it's a great time for a comeback !

Next week we visit Dunstablians in another league encounter.

FRIENDLY MATCH 11/10/08

Northampton BBOB 3rds 0 v 38 SCRUFC

Our winning start to the season rolled on with another good over Northampton BBOB's in a shortened game. We started very strongly again, with debutante Ben Boyles making several incisions into the line from full back. So much so in fact that he looked completely knackered after only 5 minutes. Our first try came following a few phases in mid field. The backs took the ball wide out on the right and the move was stopped by good defence on the BBOB 22. But such was the quality of the clearing out from the supporting backs, that Skipper Mark Furneaux was able to pick up unchallenged to sprint home.

BBOB's appeared somewhat stunned as they gathered their thoughts (whilst awaiting Barry's failed conversion attempt) as like us, they had also had a winning start to the season. But they fired themselves up with the words that they could "stuff us in the scrums and should keep the ball in the pack". They seemed to have picked five props in their pack as if in an attempt to mock us for again turning out with none of our own. So it raised a wry smile at the next scrum when hooker Andy Squires, ably assisted by stand in props, Warwick and Matt Webber took the ball against the head and we scored again under the posts within a couple of minutes of the restart.

The oppositions resistance stayed strong, but a rout was now underway, as we spread the ball to all parts of the field. We scored six tries in all before the game had to be abandoned just 10 minutes after half time when the BBOB's scrum half hurt his neck and it was decided to take the safe option of calling an ambulance.

Our other tries came from Pete Ayres, Doris, Steve Judge, Mark Denton and another from skipper Mark, who out sprinted a chasing centre again from the 22. It should be noted that a 22 metre sprint is around 12 metres outside of Mark's comfort zone, so congratulations to him for an excellent double !

Another great performance lads. This week we are away to Vauxhall's II's in the league and will be looking to overturn a defeat in last years fixture.

FRIENDLY MATCH 04/10/08

SCRUFC 45 v 5 Kempston 2nds

SCRUFC secured the points with for this week league fixture with a win over Stockwood Park, when they cried off on Thursday. But not content with this , we also took on local rivals from Kempston in a Home Friendly pool fixture.

Another good win this week. Season now stands at five wins out of five for the Boys in Green & Black.

This fixture was bizarre even before the kick-off when our prop forward drought worsened to new levels, leaving us with none available. "Warwick the Brave" agreed again to play at prop and Kempston initially agreed to lend us another so we could avoid the dullest of prospects, a full game with uncontested scrums. Unfortunately the spare Kempston prop then declared he was too poorly to play for us and it looked like we were stuffed..... The squad were quietened to be given the bad news, only for someone to pipe up with "What about this bloke, he can play prop". In the corner was none other than Bedford Fitness coach and Ex Heriotts hooker "Andy", shirted, booted and ready to go.

So with a quick re-shuffle, we had two hookers playing prop and flanker Steve Rogers playing hooker. Andy was introduced to Warwick and courteously asked him which side he would like to play. Warwick, the old "Dog of War" said he would wait to see how they lined up for the first scrum and decide then. 8o).... There's no substitute for Experience. We also had normal fly half Denver covering at 9, Full back Ed at 10 and Flanker Dio at 12.

Slightly under-prepared we took to the field with time for a brief warm up. Kempston were a young side who were confident following two back-to-back 50 point victories and were probably the best side we have played this season. But this was the week when we decided it was time to really start playing to our potential and we gave our young oppo a tough afternoon. We carried the ball with real menace in the forwards, then set and cleared out beautifully. This of course, set up good platforms for our backs to let rip. Fly half Ed Strand scored three tries, but all scored after several phases, where the opposition defence had been severely stretched. Further tries were scored by Steve Rogers and Doris. Loan player Andy scored two tries and gave us a master class in body positioning when going into contact, breaking tackles and beating the gain line all afternoon.

Other debutante's Mike Barlow and Andy Harrison both made good starts in the pack as the squad goes form strength to strength.

Kempston had their fair share of possession, but got caned by our back row, especially Skipper Mark Furneaux. This was followed up further by good tackling form the backs. And just when it looked like we were about to keep a clean sheet, Kempston came back with a superb counter attack try, which summed up their spirit throughout.

And finally, the conversions saga goes on. Barry Stuart, not wanting to be "out experienced" by Warwick slotted home five out of five conversions from close range. The two wide conversion we had, he gracefully offered to youngster Ed Strand to have a go, which he duly missed. Well done Barry !

Next week we are due to play Northampton Mens Own. Our Social Secretary is currently on holiday, so we have organised an impromptu night out after the game at the Bedford Beer Festival. Friends & WAGS welcome. Be good to see a few ex-players, Brownie, Pete Roberts, mad Mickey Bowyer etc and even Sooty will be welcomed.

Until next time ..

LEAGUE MATCH 27/09/08

SCRUFC 35 vs Bedford Swifts 2nds 10

A dominant performance from the SCRUFC forwards set up a good win against a Swifts II side that (to be fair) were slightly depleted from last weeks game. The win was based on a simple platform of total dominance from our forwards. The scrum got better and better as the game went on, with total annihilation by the end of the game. (something we haven't seen for quite a while). It was good to have last years skipper "Big Matt", back in the line up again, combining well with new lock "Even Bigger Justin". Steve Gutsell won just about everything from the front of the line, and behind him we snapped up just about everything else. The lose play was much improved from last week, with plenty of quick ball allowing our speedy back line up to cause problems to Swifts defence all afternoon. Swifts back defended very well and all our tries were hard earned.

We scored three tries uphill in the first 20 mins and looked to be cruising towards a big win, but this was followed by a 10 minute period where we lost concentration and allowed Swifts back in to score their two tries for the day. But thankfully this was only a blip and we got back into our game and didn't give the oppo another sniff for the rest of the game.

Our six tries this week came from Shaun Wake, Dio (2), Denver, Spencer and our illustrious captain Mark Furneaux. Barry Stuart kicked a well timed penalty, but his 100% conversion rate from last week slipped down slightly to 16%. Bad luck Barry.

Debutante wingers Mark Denton and Ollivier (French - haven't got his surname) both made impressive starts. After appearing to be struggling for players on Thursday last week (especially backs) , we ended up with 8 subs. Apologies to those who had little or no pitch time this week, we will try to put this right over the coming weeks.

Dio quite rightly won the Man of Match award, but had to nominate Skipper Mark to step in for the pint-in-one competition. He duly lost to Swifts in a fashion which was almost as embarrassing as Denver's similarly poor effort at swifts last week. Something to work on !

This week we host Stockwood III's in our second league encounter.

FRIENDLY MATCH 20/09/08

Bedford Swifts 2nds 17  vs  SCRUFC 21

SCRUFC travelled to Bedford to play Swifts in a hastily re-arranged pool fixture after Cambridge Vets cried off during the week. Ironically we play Swifts II in a home league fixture next week.

In a very hard fought game against a much improved Swifts II side, the boot of Barry Stuart proved to be the difference with both sides scoring three tries a piece. Our long term full back converting both of his kicks and Denver slotting the third.

The win was set up with tries from Paul Evans, Mark Fowler and Steve Judge. The first came about, following a sizzling burst from Denver from just inside half way and a nicely timed off load to Paul Evans who out paced the defence to complete the move.

The second try came from a good set of closes phases form the forwards inside the oppositions 22, winning quick ball, which was finished off by Mark Fowler coming in off his wing to take the ball at pace from a few yards out, to score under the posts.

The third try came form from a very simple first phase backs move, getting the ball out early to Steve Judge who was able to user his pace to burst through the stretched defence for a score under the posts to put us comfortably ahead.

However, Swifts came back with two late tries as they were able to get their big forwards rumbling. They also dropped the ball whilst in the process of going over in the corner. But we dominated for the most part of the game and always looked most likely to score. So it will be anybody's game next week in our crucial first league encounter.

FIRST MATCH - SEASON 2008-09

FRIENDLY MATCH 06/09/08

Sharnbrook & Colworth 111  vs  Rushden & Higham 3rds 5

This is not a misprint, we really did put 111 points on Rushden at the weekend !

However - things weren't looking too good prior to kick-off, when two late drop-outs left us with 14 men. But thankfully Rushden (Who had arrived 2 hours before kick-off) had a spare body to lend us. Lack of front row meant we had some serious rearranging to do. Lock (Jamma) and hooker (Warwick) transferred to propping duties, while Flanker (Liam Roberts) was moved to hooker. Centre (Pete Ayres) slotted into the second row to make up a somewhat makeshift arrangement. Things were looking even worse when we took the field to find their pack was absolutely huge. At least 3 stone a man heavier.

We started the game playing uphill and it wasn't long before the associated crowd winced as the first scrum went down. But amazingly we held our own untroubled, a feat which continued throughout the match. From the ensuing scrum possession, the ball was moved wide for young Tom Faulkner to score in the corner within 2 minutes of making his club debut. Well done Tom. More tries soon followed, as it became apparent that Rushden's thirds were very much out of the mould of a traditional coarse rugby team.

A try fest followed with us touching down Nineteen times overall. This was achieved despite the game finishing 15 minutes early, as the opposition finally lost the will to carry on after losing their hooker to injury. Our stand in skipper Steve Gutsell sportingly agreed that the contest was over, but full credit to Rushden who kept playing with a good spirit throughout.

We had three players making Hat-Tricks. Steve Judge lead the way with five tries, Fonzie got four and Dio got three. Other scorers were Denver (two) Barry Stuart, Warwick & Tom Faulkner.

Perhaps this - Was this a club record ? If there are any club statisticians out there, perhaps they could let us know. We believe we may also have not just a club, but a potential world record in the shape of club stalwart Barry Stuart. Barry missed a total of eleven conversion's in 65 mins of rugby, has this been done before? We will be submitting a request to Guinness shortly. However, he did score 21 points on the day, which is not bad for a bloke well into his forties.

FRIENDLY MATCH 19/4/08

Sharnbrook & Colworth 52  vs  Dunstablians 4ths 0

Sharnbrook & Colworth brought down the curtain on the final home game of the season with an emphatic win against Dunstablians 4ths.

With a number of speedy back available for selection, SCRUFCs used the pace to their advantage and with Fonze and Denver Bennett orchestrating moves, it was not long before SCRUFCS got on the score sheet and did not look back.

Chris Strand topped the try scoring by bagging a hat-trick whilst Howard Bullough helped himself to a brace.  Tries were also scored by Hamish, Steve Judge and Ben Buchan.

Ever dependable kicker, Barry Stuart converted 5 of the tries while Denver Bennett put himself on the score sheet by also adding a conversion to seal the 52 – 0 win.

This weekend sees SCRUFC travel to Oundle for the annual round robin tournament before they jet off on tour to Poland to take part in the Warsaw 10s.

An interesting take, below, from the a Dunstable player after Saturday, particuarly the last two sentances! Good work the Fonz.

Not the result we wanted, but I can only hope that it is the wake up call that we need for next season. Despite repeated warnings from Spencer and other members of the 3rd XV who had faced the same crowd the previous week, we did not heed their warning and were made to pay dearly. We were effectively cut to pieces in the backs and they ran in easy try after easy try. This is going to need to be addressed in training this summer as every game we play next year will be as physical and tough as this one was for us. It seemed at the beginning that we had the right mind set to really be able to compete in this game, and indeed in the forwards we did just that, particularly in the second half when we completely dominated the scrum etc. There were high points in the game, but overall it was a bit of a lacklustre performance. It has to be said, that I was NO WAY nearly beaten by the 13 year old scrum half in the snakebite race after the match. I was just trying to drink carefully so I didn't spill any on my top.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 5A MATCH – MERIT TABLE

08/03/08

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 47  vs  Stockwood Park 2nds 7

Sharnbrook & Colworths continued in rampant form with an emphatic victory on Saturday.  With players out of position due to many of the usual squad being unavailable, SCRUFC got off to a good start playing up hill.  The game time was reduced due to a late start but within the first 10 minutes, Denver Bennett made a break and fed the ball to Adrian Smith who ran in to score.  The conversion was added by Barry Stuart.

It was not long before SCRUFC scored again when Howard Bullough powered through four tackles to score.  Stuart again added the conversion.  Two more tries quickly followed from David Day and Denver Bennett, both of which, Stuart converted.  These tries were sandwich between a converted try by Stockwood Park who continued to press for further scores.

However, with a halftime lead of 28 – 7 and the downhill slope, the second half was mostly played in the Stockwood Park half.  Steve Judge picked up the first of his two tries when he exploited a gap in the Stockwood defence and this was followed by a great try from Paul Evans.  Judge scored his second try in a move similar to his first and with Barry Stuart scoring a further two conversations to leave the home side with a 47 – 7 win.

SCRUFC do not have a game now until the 29th March when the play their annual VPs Day game.

Sharnbrook & Colworth 41  vs  Northampton Heathens 2nds  12

Sharnbrook & Colworth followed on from the good win against Swifts last week with a fine win over Northampton Heathens on Saturday.

Playing up the slope in the first half, SCRUFC got into their stride early when Steve Judge finished off a move to score in the corner.  Whilst the conversion was missed it was not long before SCRUFC second try came when Denver Bennett went over.  Barry Stuart kicked the first of his four conversions.

Heathens got back into the game with a powerful forwards try that came at the end of about 10 phases of play.  The conversion was scored and the margin reduced to 12 - 7.  The play then ebbed and flowed until excellent work from the forwards resulted in Warwick Bennett picking off the base of the ruck and driving over to score.  With the conversion added, the half time whistle came with SCRUFC leading 19 - 7.

With the downhill slope in the second half, SCRUFC continued where they left off with a try by Chris Strand who evaded four tackles in his half way line dash to score.  Mark Furneaux added another with a drive from the back of the scrum 7 metres out and Steve Judge rounded off the SCRUFC tries with his second of the match.  With Barry Stuart adding the conversions and a penalty, the score line was 41 - 7.  However, credit to Heathens who continued to play good rugby and were rewarded with the final score of the match to finish the game 41 - 12.

This weekend sees SCRUFC away in a friendly fixture against Cottenham Renegades

Friendly

Sharnbrook & Colwoth RUFC 27 vs Renegades 0

Saturday 8th December, 2007

Sharnbrook & Colworth (SCRUFC) chalked up another win this weekend, when they played a friendly against Renegades from Cambridgeshire.

SCRUFC were back to a near full strength team and on a windy day, dominated an excellent game played in a true old fashioned rugby spirit.  After a few quick backs moves SCRUFC were awarded a scrum 5 metres out and following a big shove, Mark Furneaux once again got himself on the scoresheet with a simple try.  In the strong wind the conversion was missed.

Time and time again, SCRUFC pressurised the Renegades defence but it held up well until 20 minutes in when another forwards drive 5 metres out went to ground and quick thinking scrum half, Steve Judge, picked up and dived the full half-yard over the line to score.  The conversion was added by Barry Stuart.

The second half was much the same as the first with SCRUFC dominating but Renegades putting up very spirited and stiff defence.  However, it was not long before centre Paul Evans added to his seasons personal tally with a brace of tries which sandwiched a fine try from big second row Matthew Webber, who appeared from nowhere to hit the perfect angle to score.  All second half tries were unconverted and when the final whistle blew, SCRUFC were worthy of their 27 – 0 win.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 5A MATCH – MERIT TABLE (01/12/07)
                          Daventry 3rds  5  vs  Sharnbrook & Colworth  29

Sharnbrook & Colworth notched up any impressive win in the league against Daventry 3rds on Saturday.

From the whistle, the SCRUFC forwards took the game to their counterparts, winning the majority of rucks and with the scrum doing a fine job, they were creating a platform for the backs to work.  The strong wind didn't help and both teams were guilty of stray passing at times.  However, with 15 minutes gone, powerhouse Captain, Mark Furneaux was once again first to the ball when he gathered it and charged 15 metres and dived for the line.  Unfortunately, the pitch markings were not clear and he had dived at the 5 metre line,  but with the Daventry defence standing watching Furneaux got to his feet and this time scored.  The resulting penalty was missed.

The second SCRUFC try was quick to follow when Daventry were put under pressure in their own 22.  The ball popped out of the tackle and Steve Judge, having a fantastic game at scrum half, reacted quickest and he picked up, beat the winger, and raced in to score another unconverted try.

All the play was in the Daventry half and the pressure was telling as mistakes in their passing created the third SCRUFC try when Mark Fowler intercepted and raced the full half of the pitch to score under the posts.  Barry Stuart added the conversion.

The half finished like the start with Furneaux once again influential in turning over the ball and then gathering a pass to score his second, and well deserved, try, which Stuart converted.  The first half ended 24 - 0.

Daventry were not about to give up and their half time talk did the trick with a much stronger start and performance in the second half.  Their forwards started to give them a base to work.  Some nice close passing and driving enabled them to gain the yards and their pack drove on and finally pushed over for the try for which, their move had thoroughly deserved.  The conversion was missed but suddenly, SCRUFC were is a different game with the Daventry forwards now competing on more equal terms.

Both defences however, were standing up well to each other attacks, but SCRUFC continued to look for the try that would seal the win.  It finally came with 10 minutes to go.  Fowler made a big run and was high-tackled 15 metres short.  Denver Bennet took the tap penalty and switched the move to pass the ball to Adrian Smith who ran in to score.

The wind didn't help the conversion attempt and no more scores were to follow, even though Daventry still played well to look for a consolation try.  The game ended in a SCRUFC victory 29 - 5.

Next week sees SCRUFC play the first of two friendly matches before the Christmas break when they entertain Renegades.

FRIENDLY MATCH (13/10/07)

Cambridge Vets 39  vs  Sharnbrook & Colworth 7

Following on from their 48 - 5 defeat at the hands of Stockwood Park 3rds last week, Sharnbrook & Colworth lost out again in their latest friendly encounter away at Cambridge Vets.

Squad size largely dictated this win.  With Sharnbrook leading at half time, the Cambridge side made 12 changes to inject some younger legs and ran out easy winners.

The first half was a good contest with both sides playing some excellent attacking rugby.  After absorbing the Cambridge attack for the first five minutes, Sharnbrook then spent ten minutes in the opponents 22.  Although being awarded a couple of penalties, Sharnbrook elected to run the ball rather than kick for goal but the pressure was not rewarded with any points.  It was left to Cambridge to score first when their next attack resulted in a penalty in front of the posts, which they kicked for a 3 point lead.

Sharnbrook started to win the rucks and scrums and this momentum created space for the ever reliable Denver Bennett to exploit and his try and conversion gave Sharnbrook the half time lead of 7 - 3.

With the game evenly poised, Cambridge brought on their substitutes and the game swung in their favour.  Although the Sharnbrook team stuck to the task, the Cambridge team were far to strong and ran in six second half tries, three of which were converted to leave the final score 39 – 7.

This week see Sharnbrook return to league action with a home match against Daventry 3rds.

FRIENDLY MATCH (29/9/07)

Sharnbrook & Colworth 27  vs  Bedford Athletic Vets 25

Sharnbrook & Colworth just edged this encounter between two well match sides in an entertaining game and arguably the best game of the season so far.

With the slope benefiting Sharnbrook in the first half, they scored within the first five minutes when after two quick breaks, Sharnbrook were awarded a penalty 10 yards from the Bedford Athletic line and a quick tap and run created space for Greg Frost to dive over.  Barry Stuart converted.

Sharnbrook should have been further ahead during the next 10 minutes but handling errors cost them.  However, a quick move by the Sharnbrook backs created an overlap for Barry Stuart to race clear and score.  Again converting is own try.

Bedford Athletic made some tactical changes and this began to pay dividends with them gaining more control of the ball and they were rewarded with a fine try of their own to leave the half time score at 14 – 5.

The second half was extremely close.  Athletic scored first following a break by the forwards, which released their centre Dom Hicks to score.  The conversion was missed but Sharnbrook fought back and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which Barry Stuart kicked.

Athletic came roaring back and their playmaker Chris Eldridge, created their third try only for Sharnbrooks own playmaker Denver Bennett to score a try.  With the scores at 24 – 15, Sharnbrook felt they had the game in the bag but the Athletic Vets are not a team to accept defeat readily and stepped up their game to score two further tries and put them in front for the first time in the game with 5 minutes left to play.

This created the finale that the game deserved and after good forward work from Sharnbrook, they were awarded a penalty just at the final whistle, which Barry Stuart scored to keep his 100% record for the game and also secure the win 27 – 25 win for Sharnbrook.

This weekend sees Sharnbrook & Colworth travel to Stockwood Park 3rds in another league encounter.

FRIENDLY MATCH (22/9/07)

St Ives 42  vs  Sharnbrook & Colworth 0

St Ives ran out easy winners in this weekend’s friendly fixture with Sharnbrook & Colworth.

Sharnbrook were struggling from the beginning with many of the team playing out of position due to a number of absentees.  St Ives exploited this well in the first half and ran in 42 unanswered points.

The seconds half was different with Sharnbrook defending better and as the players began to get more use to their new roles started to create some attack themselves.  They were unlucky to have two tries ruled out by the referee.  In both cases being adjudged to have gone too quickly when awarded a penalty.  However, both sides failed to score and therefore the game ended with the same score line as at halftime.

Performances of note came from Kieran Steele on his debut along with Sylvain Foucart on the wing, which is not bad for a second row!

This weekend sees another friendly fixture when the team take on Bedford Athletic Vets.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 5A MATCH – MERIT TABLE (15/9/07)

 Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 31  vs  Vauxhall 2nds 3

Sharnbrook & Colworth got back to winning ways with a hard fought game against Vauxhall 2nds.

Playing up hill in the first half, Sharnbrook scored first when Paul Evans ran through from his centre position to score.  Denver Bennett deputising as goal kicker added the conversation.

Hard work from the Vauxhall pack resulted in them being awarded a penalty, which they duly kicked to reduce the deficit.  However, with each side cancelling each others attacks out, no more scores would follow in the first half to leave the half time score line at 7 – 3.

The second half proved to be a rather one sided in the score line although perhaps this does not reflect the flow of the game and Vauxhall had a few chances to score themselves.   However, with the slope in their favour, Sharnbrook took  advantage of the slope and club stalwart Denver Bennett once again put himself up for prime candidate for the seasons top scorer with two tries. Another from Steve and a further try for Paul Evans, two of which were converted by Denver Bennett, meant that the final score was 31 – 3.  Vauxhall refused to let their own effort reduce and were unlucky not to score, which their play had deserved.

Sharnbrook & Colworth play at away on Saturday when they take on St Ives 2nds in the first of their friendly matches.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 5A MATCH – MERIT TABLE (8/9/07)

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 0  vs  Kempston XV 39

Sharnbrook & Colworth were on the receiving end of a thumping from a well-drilled and strong Kempston XV squad.

Good Sharnbrook defending mixed with handling errors from Kempston kept the score from being more emphatic and at times, Sharnbrook did manage to control the game.  However, with Kempston being superior in the forwards and good running from their backs, it made it tough for Sharnbrook to register a score that their play more than deserved.

Kempston maintained their quality play and were well-deserved winners on the day.

Sharnbrook & Colworth play the third home game in a row on Saturday when they take on Vauxhall 2nds in the third of their league matches.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 5A MATCH – MERIT TABLE (1/9/07)

 Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 46  vs  Bugbrooke 2nds 15

Sharnbrook & Colworth got their new season off to a flying start with a fine league win over a spirited Bugbrooke side.

Playing up hill in the first half, Sharnbrook were under pressure from the start and after some good work by the Bugbrooke forwards, they were rewarded when their fly-half dropped a goal to give them a 3 point lead.

Sharnbrook hit back quickly and following a scrum the ball was moved quickly out to the backs and Paul Evans found a gap and sprinted in for a try.  The conversation was missed but from the restart Sharnbrook secured the ball and flanker Ben Buchan peeled off and hit open space and ran 50 yards to score his try.

With spaces opening up in the Bugbrooke defence, it was not long before Sharnbrook scored their third try through Mark Fowler and then added a forth from Adrian Smith the latter being converted by Josh to give them a 24 – 3 lead.  However, the Bugbrooke team refused to give in and regrouped to score two unconverted tries before half time to reduce the first half deficit to 22 – 15.

With the downhill slope in the second half, Sharnbrook started well and scored a quick try through Pete Eryes, but the game then ebbed and flowed as each team cancelled the other’s attack.  However, the Sharnbrook forward were beginning to get more of the ball and it was not long before the sixth try was scored when Denver Bennett laid off the perfect pass for Mark Fowler to scream in for his second of the match.  This was followed by Pete Eyres second try both of which were converted by Josh.

Following a couple of injuries and a switch of positions, David Judge, now playing at wing, scored the eight and last try for Sharnbrook.

With the game all but won, Bugbrooke refused to give-in and for the final 5 minutes were arguably the better side in attack but good Sharnbrook defending prevented them from scoring to give the home team a 46 – 15 victory.

Flanker Ben Buchan, wing Steve Spencer and second row Paul Cammack all had debut games for the club. Paul Evans returned in the centre. Scrum half Josh and wing Pete Eryes also returned after joining the club at the end of last season. Steve Dunnett had a solid first half at loosehead prop.

Sharnbrook & Colworth play at home again on Saturday when they take on Kempston 2nds in the second of their league matches.

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC  22  -  Luton 3rds  24

Sharnbrook & Colworth lost their friendly against Luton 3rds last Saturday in a tight game, but can be pleased with their battling display.

The weather conditions made a running game difficult for both teams and this was the true 'game of two halves'.

Sharnbrook had the wind behind in the first half and by half time were 22 - 0 ahead.  Barry Stuart opened the scoring after 10 minutes when he slotted home a penalty. Second row, Steve Gutsell then finished off a move in the corner to score an unconverted try.

Although the wind made it extremely difficult, Sharnbrook were having some success with their back moves and a fine interchange between Denver Bennett and Nick Randall created the second and best try of the game when Nick Randall blasted through to score.  Barry Stuart converted.

Denver Bennett created the third try with a searing run before popping the ball back inside to Adrian Smith to run through and score.  Barry Stuart was again accurate with the boot.

Sharnbrook, knew the second half would be difficult against the wind and a good Luton pack and so it proved.  A mistake on the Sharnbrook 5 metre line gifted the visitors an early try and from then on, their forwards controlled the game.  Great defending from Sharnbrook kept them in the match but two further tried reduced the score line to 22. -  17.  Sharnbrook held on to the final minute when after sustained pressure, the Luton No 8 (who had had a fantastic game) bundled over from 2 yards.  With the scores tied, the Luton kicker just managed to slot the ball between the posts and record the 22 - 24 win.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 6 MATCH – MERIT TABLE

17/03/07

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC  29 – Northampton Casuals 3rds  17

Sharnbrook & Colworth could finally lay claim to the East Midlands League 6 Merit Table on Saturday following a 29 – 17 win over Northampton Casuals 3rds (the only team to beat Sharnbrook in the league this year)

In very windy conditions, Sharnbrook won the toss and elected to play with the slope and wind in the first half.  The decision proved to be important as the home side were 24 – 5 ahead at half time which gave them a useful cushion to defend in the second half.

Early Sharnbrook pressure led to a penalty in front of the posts, which Barry Stuart scored.  A few minutes’ later and well-worked backs move created space for Adrian Smith to run down the wing and around under the posts for a try.  Barry Stuart converted this to makes the score 10 – 0.  However, the away team were to be rewarded with their own fine play and scored an unconverted try.

It then turned into the Warwick Bennett show.  First the ever-dependable prop/hooker picked up from the back of a ruck and dove over to score a converted try.  Then two minutes later Bennett was there again when he capitalised on a mistake in the visitors line out and collected the ball to run through unopposed to score another converted try just before half time.

As the two teams turned round, the away team took the game to Sharnbrook and were unlucky not to get a try when the winger was judged to have put a foot in touch.  However, Sharnbrook took the play up to the visitors 5 metre line and another mistake in the lineout allowed Warwick Bennett through for his third try; a carbon copy of his second.  The conversion was missed.  Northampton worked their way back into the game and scored two tries of which one was converted and the rest of the match flowed well between the two team without further score.  When the final whistle came, Sharnbrook could finally relax knowing they had done enough to secure the league victory.

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC  26  -  Cambridge Vets  12

Sharnbrook & Colworth (SCRUFC) entertained Cambridge Vets on Saturday to mark the occasion of their annual VPs Day.  Following a A la Carte ploughmans lunch the VPs they settled into the first half of the international on the tele whilst the players got ready.  Once that game started, the VPs did not let the team down and in typical SCRUFC fashion started to appear on the touchline in ‘dribs and drabs’ to lend their support.

A massive thanks needs to go to the Cambridge Vets turning up.  They only had 11 players and lesser teams would have called off last minute and left us without a game.  All credit to them for turning up and we hope that a regular fixture can be obtained with this very good team.  However, despite Cambridge being lent a few players (rather surprisingly, we lent then some good players including one young speed merchant by the name of Fonze) they played fantastically well and made it a good spectical for the crowd to watch.  Fonze in particular had an outstanding half and made the SCRUFC backs to like a bunch of amateurs.  Fortunately, captain Matt Webber was on hand at half time to switch him on to our team in addition to David Judge who had a outstanding day for both teams and deservedly was awarded with the man of the match drink.  Tim and mark deserve a special mention for playing the full match for the Cambridge side.  Without them doing that, it would not have been a good competition and it is a sign of great team spirit that they were happy to play for the visitors.

A special mention needs to go to two players.  The first was Carl who turned up for his first game for the club.  Mind you, the sound of relief in the dressing room was deafening when we Jim confirm he used to play with him at RAEs and he playing for us.  Prior to that point, someone in the changing rooms had been heard to say “Christ, I hope he’s playing for us.  I nearly Sh!t myself when I saw him come in the changing room”.  Thankfully, Carl lived up to his billing and put in a great performance on the pitch.  Carl thanks for playing and we look forward to you playing a few more games for SCRUFC.  The second mention goes to Mick Bowyer who put the fear of god into the opposition (not to mention the home team!) and really got the forwards going when it seemed we were about to get over run.  Well done Mick and hopefully we will see you for a few more games.

Playing up hill, Cambridge struck first with a converted  try from their forwards.  This was cancelled out with a similar converted try by the home team when James Lawrence peeled off the back of a maul to drive over the line.  Ever dependable Barry Stuart converted the try.

A number of handling errors for both team meant that no more scores would come before half time.

With the scores at 7 - 7 the change of direction seemed to galvanise Sharnbrook into action although it with the visitors, with the downhill slope, that scored first.  After missing a penalty attempt, a quick move broke the Sharnbrook line and couple of missed tackles allowed the visitors to score.  The resulting conversion was missed.

However, Sharnbrook, playing up hill stepped up their game and were in front for the first time when the forwards got the back line going and a break from Shaun Wake feed Howard Bullough to race in.  Barry Stuart converted his second of three.  Five minutes later the home team extended their lead when Steve Judge looped round to create the overlap and scored in the corner.  Another quick backs move saw Shaun wake hitting a gap to score a well deserved converted try under the posts to put Sharnbrook 26 - 12 in front a guarantee victory on their special day.

This week sees Sharnbrook play their final league game of the season with a home fixture to Northampton Casuals 3rds.

EAST MIDLANDS LEAGUE 6 MATCH – MERIT TABLE

Sharnbrook & Colworth  46  v   Wellingbrough Ogs 2nds  7

After a few weeks of disruption caused by poor weather, cancellations and the start of the 6 Nations, Sharnbrook took to the field for their first league match of 2007 and completed a 46 - 7 victory over Wellingborough OGs 2nds to keep them top of the East Mids. League 6 Merit Table.

Starting the game uphill, Sharnbrook weathered some early Wellingborough forwards pressure before a knock on gave a scrum to Sharnbrook.  The forwards stepped up a gear and shoved the visitors back and a quick kick saw play move up to the Wellingborough twenty two.  Sharnbrook kept the pressure on and following a poor clearance, the ball was ran back, passed thorough the backs and Fly-half Denver Bennett raced in to score the first of Sharnbrooks 8 tries.  Barry Stuart kicked the first of his three conversions of the afternoon.

Steve Judge scored the second try when he ran in from the twenty two to dive over the line.  Judge also scored the fourth try just before half time and these sandwiched a strong break from the centres where Shaun Wake scored to add to his tally for the season.

Sharnbrook we 24 - 0 up at half time and with the downhill slope, sensed more tries.  These came when Greg Frost combined with Wake (now playing flanker) to score and sub, Howard Bullough, ran it near the posts.  Wellingborough never gave in and a fine move up the centre of the pitch created space and their centres’ strong running to beat three tackle resulted in a try under the posts which their play had richly deserved.

However, Sharnbrook kept up the pressure and two further tries from Shaun Wake and Mark Furneaux capped off a fine 46 - 7 victory.

Sharnbrook are in league action again this week when they travel to Cutler Hammer to play Kempston 2nds.

Bedford Swifts RUFC 3 v Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 20

Sharnbrook got the new year off in winning ways with a 20 – 3 victory away at Swifts 3rds.  The
match was played in poor weather conditions, the sodden pitch and greasy ball making expansive rugby almost impossible.

The first half finished level at 3 - 3 after a converted penalty kick for each side, both sets of forwards having seemingly cancelled out each others hard work. Large parts of the half were taken up by set pieces with the Swifts larger pack winning more of the ball.

The second half saw the match open up a little with Sharnbrook starting to dominate possession. This possession was turned into a 10 - 3 lead when Denver Bennetts delicate chip and chase resulted in a try that he then duly converted.   Bennett then added his second penalty of the game to make the score 13 – 3.  Swifts came back strongly, but their pressure was not rewarded with a try.

As the match neared its conclusion, Sharnbrook scored another converted try thanks to the efforts of the full playing Bennett family.  Warwick Bennett shipped the ball to his son Fonze who beat several opposition players to score his first try for Sharnbrook.  Denver Bennett kept it in the family by kicking the conversion to round off a 20 - 3 win.

On Saturday 13th January Sharnbrook entertain the Cambridgeshire side Renegades and will hope to reverse the score line they suffered when the sides met recently.

Wellingborough OGs 2nds 24 vs Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 28

Saturday 11th November, 2006

This was the stereotypical game of two half’s with Sharnbrook happy to come away with a very close victory to make it 9 games unbeaten.

Sharnbrook took the lead after 10 minutes when, wing, Howard Bollough finished off a quick break by Denver Bennett. Bennett used the centre as a decoy to put in Bollough. The second try came when, centre Shaun Wake split the defence and ran in under the posts. This was quickly followed by try number 3 when the opposite wing Adrian Smith was set up nicely by Mark Fowler to run in his try and Howard Bollough made it four in the first half when he finished off yet another move started by the every dangerous Denver Bennett. Barry Stuart converted all four tries which was to prove essential to the final scoreline.

In between the tries, Wellingbrough scored two of their own of which one was converted. With the wind against them in the second half, Sharnbrook were forced into defensive mode as Wellingborough took the game to them and they were properly rewarded with two further tries. Again only one of them converted. Sharnbrook tried a few attacks but the home team sensed they could achieve a victory and for the last 10 minutes of the game spent the majority in the Sharnbrook half. However, good defending by Sharnbrook prevented any further scoring and as the line was cleared, the ref called time on a very physical and closely matched game.

Sharnbrook & Colwoth RUFC 19 vs Old Northamptonians 3rds 17

Saturday 4th November, 2006

An eight match unbeaten run was the prize for Sharnbrook following their win on Saturday against Old Northamptonians 4ths. However, this match was never going to be a one-sided event to mirror some of Sharnbrooks recent results as the Northampton side match Sharnbrook in this encounter.

After missing a penalty, Sharnbrook took the lead when, centre, Howard Bullough ran between a gap to score a well made try. The conversion was missed but Sharnbrook scored again when leading try scorer Paul Evans also made the most of a gap in the defence and scored almost a mirror image try of the first. Barry Stuart converted. The third try came from a mistake from the Old Northamptians full back as he dropped the ball with Paul Evans charging at him. Evans chipped through and ran on to touch to ball down under the post. Again Barry Stuart added the conversation.

With a 19 – 0 lead Sharnbrook were in great mood, however a slip in defense allowed a fine Old Northamptonians forwards move finished off by a fine run from their hooker to score on halftime. The resulting conversion was missed and Sharnbrook had a 19 -5 half time lead.

With the slope in the second half, Old Northamptonians took the game to Sharnbrook and well deserved their second try when their Centre wrong footed the defence and scored under the posts, the conversion was added and the deficit reduced. Old Northamptonians then had a stroke of fortune when after heavy pressure on the Sharnbrook try line. Sharnbrook won a scrum on their 5 metre line and as the ball came back to be cleared, it was dropped and the bounce fell to the Old Northamptonian player to touch down. The conversion was missed and now the score was 19 -17 to the home team.

The game then ebbed and flowed with both sides putting up great defence but no further scores were to come. The referee finally called time an a very good match.

Sharnbrook are back in league action this weekend when they travel away to Wellingborough OGs.

East Midlands League 6

Sharnbrook & Colwoth RUFC 83 v Thorney II 0

Saturday 28th October, 2006

Sharnbrook continued their unbeaten run with an emphatic 13 try win against an experienced Thorney II team.

The Sharnbrook pack, including debutante Mark Holland at lock, were relentless in their work at set pieces and in the loose, providing the backs with fast, quality ball. In turn the backs were outstanding, with Man of the Match Denver Bennett scoring a hat trick. Full back Barry Stewart also scored three tries in addition to kicking nine conversions. Other tries from came from; Greg Frost who scored two tries from centre, wingers Romain Deschamps and Jim Harris scored one apiece and also one for scrum half Will Kester.

The forwards also got on the score sheet with a well anticipated try from Dio Antilles and one for his fellow flanker, Mark Furneaux after great support work. Despite the score line Thorney to there credit kept working and for a ten minute period in the second half had the home team penned back defending their line.

Sharnbrook have a break from league action this weekend when they face Old Northamptonians in a friendly fixture on Saturday.

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 59 vs Wellingborough Town 4ths 0

For the second week running, Sharnbrook had to rely on a friendly pool fixture, following the cancellation of their League game due to the opposition being unable to field a team. Wellingborough Town kindly offered to travel with a 21 man squad to the Colworth Sports Ground where they met a strong Sharnbrook side who were intent on maintaining their unbeaten run.

Sharnbrook were in front inside the first 10 minutes when a quick move among the backs sent, centre, Paul Evans in for the first of his four tries. Barry Stuart converted the first of his seven conversions in this match. The second try was similar to the first with the ball moving through the backs for, wing, Adrian Smith to race round his opposite number to score.

Sharnbrook maintained their rhythm and the third try (and arguably the best of the season so far) followed when the forwards set out some great ball for a move right across the backs to Adrian Smith who passed back inside to Dominique Hicks who feed Barry Stuart, who timed a perfect pass to, prop, Warwick Bennet, to score under the posts.

Warwick Bennet got his second try when he popped up supporting a quick break through the centre for him to score in the corner. The fifth try came just before half time, when scrum half, Will Kester, found a gap to race through and as he was tackled by the full back passed to Paul Evans to score.

Wellingborough were not going to accept defeat easily and at the start of the second hal,f took the game to Sharnbrook. For the first 15 minutes, Wellingborough were camped in the Sharnbrook 22 but good defending prevented them from scoring and a quick break from, flanker, Dio Antille put in, centre, Dominique Hicks for his try. Paul Evans soon scored Sharnbrooks seventh try and his third of the game and then a link up between Dio Antille and Dominique Hicks, in almost a carbon copy of their first, allowed Hicks to score his second try. Wellingborough continue to fight for a score but a turnover by Sharnbrook created some room for Paul Evans to run in his forth try and Sharnbrooks ninth to seal the 59 – 0 win.

This weekend, Sharnbrook hope to be back in league action when they take on Thorney 2nds at home.

Cambridge Exiles 17 – vs - Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 17

Sharnbrook travelled away again last weekend following their home match being cancelled due to the opposition not being able to fulfil the fixture. The pool system rearranged a fixture to play Cambridge Exiles away. With Cambridge 1st team playing a National 2 league fixture, the large crowd watching that game certainly inspired both sides to up their performance on the adjoining pitch.

Sharnbrook started quickly and strong Cambridge defending prevented them from scoring early. However is was Sharnbrook who scored first after 15 minutes when Barry Stuart kicked a penalty to give the away team a 3 – 0 lead. The home side played themselves back in and were rewarded with a converted try after their fly half ghosted in under the posts. Barry Stuart regained the lead for Sharnbrook when he charged down a return kick from his own ‘Up and Under’ and touched down between the posts. The conversion gave Sharnbrook a 10 – 7 half time lead.

Early in the second half, a fine Sharnbrook forwards move was capped with a try for James Lawrence when we peeled off a rolling maul and barged his way over. Barry Stuart kicked the conversation with the help of the inside of the post. With Sharnbrook leading 17 – 7 the home team increased their game and scored two unconverted tries to level the scores with five minutes to go. They were then awarded a penalty, which the kicker missed and from the resulting restart Sharnbrook took the game up to the home teams 5 metre line. However, the pressure was not rewarded with any more points and the referee called time on a very entertaining 17 – 17 draw.

This weekend, Sharnbrook return to East Midlands League 6 action when they entertain Kempston 2nds.

East Midlands League 6 Match - 7th October

Thorney II  7  vs  Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 36

Sharnbrook & Colworth continued their winning ways with a forth consecutive win against a physical Thorney team.

The Sharnbrook pack worked hard all game to provide a platform for the back line to exploit. Forward David Woodbine scored the first of Sharnbrooks five tries. Then a fine move saw centre, Dominic Hicks, score the teams second.  The teams other centre, Paul Evans, was not to be outdone and capped off another excellent performance with a brace of tries.  Sharnbrooks final try was scored by Will Kester with a sensational solo try from the half way line. Full Back, Barry Stuart, was again on fine kicking form as he converted four of the tries and added a penalty to increase Sharnbrooks winning margin.

During the second half a Thorney player together with Sharnbrook lock James Lawrence were sin binned after an altercation when tempers frayed.  Thorneys score, a converted try, came from a second row player after some impressive mauling from the home team.

Sharnbrook have a break from League action this weekend when they take on Oundle 2nds/3rds in a friendly at Colworth sports field in Sharnbrook.

East Midlands League 6 Match

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 54 vs St Ives II 0

Sharnbrook and Colworth maintained their 100% home record and recorded their third win in a row following an emphatic 8 try victory over opposition who never gave up.

Winger Shaun Wake opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Barry Stuart converted to first of his seven during the game. Scrum Half Will Kester then scored a fine individual try when he raced through to beat 3 tacklers to score under the posts. Ever reliable Denver Bennett then scored the third try and Greg Frost completed the first half try scoring when he picked up from the scrum five yards out and dived over to score. This gave Sharnbrook a 28 – 0 halftime lead.

The second half started well for Sharnbrook when they turned over at the break-down and a quick moved took play up to the oppositions try line, then fine forward play resulted in Warwick Bennett going over. Flanker Dio Antille then scored the first of his two tries, which were sandwiched between a second try for Denver Bennett.

The St Ives team deserve credit for never giving up on the game and can count them selves unlucky to not have scored in the wet conditions. Sharnbrook have an away league fixture in Thorney at the weekend and hope to continue their current success.

East Midlands League 6 Match

Rushden & Higham III 0 vs Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 22

(Match abandoned after 55 minutes)

Sharnbrook and Colworth returned to Rushden and Higham for the second time this season and were on course to reverse the first meetings defeat when a nasty leg injury to a Rushden player resulted in the referee abandoning the match to allow the ambulance to attend the scene.

The match began well for Sharnbrook but they could not break through a spirited Rushden defence. Rushden then began to control the scrums but could not make this dominance tell. Both sides traded attacks and after a missed penalty for either side the deadlock was finally broken in the 25th minutes when Denver Bennett broke through took on their last man and fed the ball to Howard Bullough who ran in the try. Barry Stuart converted. Another missed penalty from Rushden could have reduced the arrears but fine work from Denver Bennett on the stroke of half time created the second try when he chipped through and he and Dominic Hicks ran through with Hicks touching down. This gave Sharnbrook a 12 – 0 halftime lead.

The second half started well for Sharnbrook and Barry Stuart scored a penalty and then converted Sharnbrooks third try and their best of the match when a fine move from a throw in created space for Denver Bennett to explore and he passed to Paul Evans who scored under the posts.

With Sharnbrook leading 22 – 0, it looked as if they would score again when the injury to the Rushden player occurred and the referee (quite rightly) called time early on a very entertaining game.

Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 52 – vs - St Neots 7

The first home game of the season saw Sharnbrook & Colworth finally off the mark with a well-deserved 8-try victory over tough opponents.

Sharnbrook started with the downhill advantage in the first half and knew they had to build some kind of lead before half time. However, it was St Neots who started the better but good Sharnbrook defending prevented them from scoring. Sharnbrook then had a couple of attacks of their own and were rewarded when winger Adrian Smith had a simple run into the corner following a fine move from the forwards. The second followed quickly when flanker Dio Antille charged down a clearance and ran on to touch the ball down under the posts. Barry Stewart scored the conversion, one of six he scored in this game.

The third try for Sharnbrook came following good link up between Denver Bennett and Shaun Wake with Wake running in to score. Following the restart, the ball was gathered by Dio Antille, who evaded tackles and ran 40 yards before offloading to Wake to score his second try in as many minutes. The final try of the half game right on the whistle as Adrian Smith kicked through and ran on to score.

With the second half uphill, Sharnbrook started as they finished off with another fine forwards set-up and backs move resulting in Shaun Wake scoring his hat-trick and the sixth try for Sharnbrook. A fine individual try from Paul Evans followed by a quick break and try from Denver Bennett finished the scoring for the home side. However St Neots refused to give up during the whole game and continued to fight hard to put a score on the board and were justifiably rewarded when the St Neots full back scored a wonderful converted try in the closing minutes.

Northampton Casuals 3rds 23 – vs - Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 17

09.09.06

The first league game of the season saw Sharnbrook & Colwoth compete in a closely fought and highly entertaining game at Northampton Casuals.

Sharnbrook scored first when Will Kester found a cap to score under the posts. The try was duly converted by Barry Stuart who then added a penalty before Casuals responded with a try and penalty of their own.

Leading at half time, the home team then began to pressure the Sharnbook defence and were rewarded with two further tries. Sharnbrook regroup and scored through Paul with Stuart adding his second conversion of the match. With ten minutes to go Sharnbrook had a player sin-binned and this gave the home team the impetus to drive forward again and they scored their final try to eventually run out 23 – 17 winners.

Adrians match report (going in Beds Times & Citizen)
2nd September, 2006
Rushden & Higham B 50 Sharnbrook & Colworth RUFC 22

The start of the rugby season on Saturday saw a highly contested match in very windy conditions. Whilst the Rushden side were worthy winner the game was closer in parts than the score line suggests.

In the first half Rushden moved into a 24 – 0 lead but a great individual try by Denver Bennett near to the end of the half gave the visitors some hope. Two tries early into the second half for Sharnbrook by Rob Campbell, one of which was converted by Barry Stuart, further reduced the deficit and had the Rushden team in some difficulties. However, Rushden regrouped well to score a couple more tries, which were duly converted and regained the comfortable gap between the scores.

Sharnbrook were not going to finish the game in down beat fashion and began to play some good running rugby which following a great break from Bennett and Campbell was finally finished off by Flanker Steve Gutsell. Near to the final whistle a clearance from Sharnbrook was pick up by the young Rushden hooker who ran the ball back to score a great individual try under the posts and seal a good win.

Adrian’s Match Report 11/03/06       Thorney 0 v SCRUFC 26

In very cold windy conditions this was probably one of SCRUFC better performances this year with both the pack and back line working well.

The start of the match was evenly contested with Thorney, on home turf, taking the game to SCRUFC. However, some great defensive kicking by Denver ensured any danger was averted and put us back into contention in the opponents half. Quick ball followed and try number came as Steve Judge (El Captain) diving ‘Robinson esk’ in the corner.

Thorney continued to battle but with the first team also playing on the same day, quickly lost some players to their first team match. This seems to affect their game and SCRUFC capitalised with three further tries from Mark Fowler, Denver and Will of which Barry Stewart converted three.

The game was slightly marred by the yellow carding of Denver (his first ever at the age of 41) for questing the referee’s decision. Mind you, he did catch the end of the Chelsea game and part of the Italy Rugby on Simms car radio. Not to mention a ten minute warm up from the car heater. Me thinks it was careful planning on his part.

Well done lads, the same is expected when we play Cambridge Vets in 2 weeks time!

36 S&C RUFC v RENEGADES 5 (VETS)            04/03/06

This Vets match contributed towards an excellent Vice Preidents Day.

Renegades ‘borrowed’ 3 players which enabled the game to go ahead. (Well done to the loanees) Sharnbrook played very well adopting an open style of play and scoring 6 tries in total. A hat trick from Captain Judgey and 1 each for Adrian, Jason and Denver.

Special mention must go to; Duncan who left the field with a nasty eye injury after just two minutes, Men of the Match Sean Dixon and Denver Bennett and finally John Binczyk who was playing for the last ever time!

The good spirit continued in the bar afterwards with entertainment provided by ‘Elvis’ and ‘Mr Muffin Man’!

60 ST NEOTS 2nds (?) v S&C RUFC 5              25/02/06

This match turned out to something of a nightmare for Sharnbrook after last weeks excellent victory. Due to play St Neots 2nd team, it appears there 1sts didnt have a game!

First half S&C were lucky to be only 35 points down after being absolutely battered for 40 minutes playing uphill and into a strong wind. At half time there were strong words and the team came out seemingly revitalised.

Almost straight away a great try was scored, Adrian finsihing off a fine move. After this the ref decided to disallow, what looked like, 2 perfectly good tries to halt the comeback and then St Neots finished the game running in 4 more tries after more shocking missed tackles all round. All in all very much a day to forget!

5 QUEENS 2nds v S&C RUFC 31                     18/02/06This was a very well deserved victory for Sharnbrook on neutral ground at Bedford Ath against a well-drilled Queens team. In vast contrast to last weeks match, 20 players turned up forcing a somewhat rare selection dilemma!

Sharnbrook started well with a strong, physical approach. It wasn’t long before the returning No 8 Stewart Tobin finished off a strong forward’s move. Later in the half, Mark Fowler scored a great try on the break to further the lead.

At half time numerous substitutes were used (what a luxury) which just gave more options to the team. The second half started with a well-worked Queens try which frayed the nerves a little.

However, Sharnbrook made sure that there were no further scores against and went on to score 3 more cracking tries of there own. Firstly Sean with a run away try, then Mark Fowler (with try no 2) who collected from Denver after a typically decisive run. Finally Steve Gutsell scored his first for the club after following up a deep attacking kick. In addition to the 5 tries Jim (Pete) Wingfield kicked 3 conversions. Towards the end our very own Russian tackling machine, Gleb came on to solidify the defence.

If there had been a Man of the Match, it would have been shared between the tremendous two returning back rows - Innes and Stewart. A Great win and an important prelude to the huge league match v St Neots this week!

17 SCURUFC v Bedford Swifts 22                   11/02/06

Bedford Swifts late resurgence gave them victory in this very entertaining and close game of rugby. Sharnbrook only had 12 of there own players so Swifts kindly gave up 3 of there many substitutes to help out.

Most would agree that the Sharnbrook forwards dominated this match winning all there own scrums, line outs (and nicking a few of Swifts as well) aswel as being physical in the loose.

Sharnbrook had started on fire with Judgy stepping in as Captain and ran in two excellent early tries playing ‘up the hill’. In all S&C scored 3 tries, two were well finished by Will, playing in the backs and the other capping of a fine all round display by Rob at fly half.

Sharnbrook were still in a commanding lead until the last 10 minutes when Swifts fought back with S&C players showing signs of ‘fatigue’and missing tackles!

All in all a great performance despite the result, however we really need more than 12 players turning up to achieve better results!

Yet another game where we should have won but managed to lose. Playing with the slope in the first half we managed to build a lead of 10-0 until leaking a soft try just before the break. Our try came from a Denver break with Rob providing the support to cross the line.
The second half was a far closer affair with St Neots applying pressure throughout the half. We did manage a break away and this led to a penalty which rob scored; this gave us a three point lead going into the last 15 minutes. Again we managed to allow them to score a soft try to take the win.  Overall a good performance with just one or two mistakes leading to their tries.

Renegades ? - SCRUFC Vets ?

A small but valiant band of veteran rugby players made the journey to Cottenham. Some not so keen, Sim struggling with a recurrent leg injury, Andy Dyks struggling with a Friday lunch to bedtime session hangover and Jamie "why do we carry on this ridiculous charade"  Stanbridge still searching for his motivation.
Having borrowed two woefully inadequate and one not so bad players the game kicked off under the firm but fair refereeing of Barry Beever. As all rugby players know the ref is crucial to the enjoyment of the game. Barry ensures he doesn't get in the way of the fun by refereeing from up to 30 yards away, his age and failing eyesight not hindering that razor sharp rugby brain from interpreting every situation according to the 1954 Teach Yourself Rugby Handbook.
A slow start that lasted all the first half saw us some points adrift at half-time. Barry Stuart pointed out it was only five scores and we could easily turn the game around. As the laughter died away the second half commenced. Pitying our situation St. Ives Renegades gave us a better player. Finally rising to the challenge of our rival  I saw the eye of the tiger and led the charge. Browny called a 4 ball into the line-out, I threw it to 2, St. Ives tapped it down to me and I ran over the try line, I would have ran over the dead ball line had Mark not shouted, "when are you going to put it down?". Browny then scored a try from a 5 yard tap penalty but I think they probably scored a bit as well which meant we lost. As ever the score eludes me!

A great performance from the whole team; we fielded a strong squad and this showed on the pitch.  We started strongly with a score within the first five minuteS which is a rarity for us.  I'm not sure who scored, it was either Adrian, Denver Barry or Shaun who all ran in tries. This strong start was carried on and another score in the first half followed, the only disappointment was allowing them to score right at the very end of the first half.  After some small changes we started the second half in similar fashion to the first and quickly built on our lead. We then came under some prolonged pressure, but managed to keep them out, until we scored once more to kill the game off.  This was a terrific team performance, I thought the pack were fantastic and won almost every scrum in the second half The two new lads Mark and Shaun made big differences with Shaun running in a try. Denver was back to his best and the two centres were solid in the tackle.
Well done all.

SCRUFC 22 - Oundle 2nds / 3rds 57

Although the score doesn’t suggest so this was a closely fought out game, we went in at half-time 22-23 down.  Yet again we failed to field a full side this time we only had 13 of our own players, Oundle kindly lent us one of theirs and we played 14 aside, with Jamie making a late appearance in the second half.

Having won the toss and electing to play downhill first, we continued in the Sharnbrook tradition and let them score three quick tries before we started playing.  Once we did start playing we kept the ball nice and tight, the pack were playing really well as a unit and creating space for the backs to exploit.

Our first try came from Gavin, this time playing scrum half, picking up a loose ball and powering over, our second try cam from continual pressure from the forwards and spreading the ball through the backs for Will to go over. Unfortunately the Ref was unsighted but Barry Beever confirmed that Will had touched down.

The third try was a masterpiece, it came just after Greg had had a clear try disallowed because again the Ref was unsighted, he must have been looking the other way as everybody else had seen it.  We were awarded a five metre scrum and kept the ball at the number 8’s feet for a push over. I’m claiming the try but there were a number of us who got our hands on it.  Barry converted two of the tries and also scored a penalty to give us some respectability.

The second half started much the same as the first with Oundle scoring three quick tries. This time we had no answer, tired legs and the slope were against us, we did play some good Rugby and managed to keep the ball in hands well and there was some good support play, but we just couldn’t score.

Overall a good performance with lots of promising signs if only we could field a full side.

SCRUFC 5 - Ampthill 3rds 57

Only the second game of the season and a tough fixture v Ampthill.

Colworth started well early on spreading the ball wide attempting to use the pace of Leo. This didn’t last for long as the wet conditions worsened and the Ampthill pack started to dominate proceedings. The large Ampthill fly half who had caused Colworth problems last season continued to do so this term with direct and purposeful running. Around the half an hour mark Will, Captain for the day got into an ‘altercation’ with most of the opposition’s pack which led to some entertaining handbags. By half time Ampthill had built up a lead with four tries.

In the second half Colworth managed to get into the game more but continued to miss tackles and were always second best in the loose. Our only score came after a 60 yard hack and chase from Barry (Stewart, not Beaver!) who having not strictly speaking grounded the ball pleaded with the referee who mistakenly trusted him and awarded the 5 points!

Towards the end, Ampthill ran in some late tries mainly due to sloppy tackling, leaving a score line of 5 – 57. Lots of work needed, one more ‘friendly’ game before the league fixtures start.

Jon's match report
Bedford Ath 3rds 21 - SCRUFC 10

A reasonable start to the season in terms of performance but a poor start in terms of numbers, I had seven players drop out on Saturday morning, this left us two players short, although the Ath did loan us one.

Our usual slow start allowed the Ath to build a 21-0 lead at half-time, although we did play with only 13 players for the last 10 minutes of the half, which was always going to make life hard in the second half.  Within one minute of the restart we had scored a try, Gavin one of the new lads somehow managed to catch a charge down, for once the over sized shirts had a positive impact on our game.  Shortly after we were running in for our second try, this was the result of a well worked backs move with Denver making the break but sadly getting caught before off loading to remarkably swift War who made the ten yard dash seem only two yards before falling over the line, a Bennet try out of the top draw.

Some notable performances came from the debutants, I thought Gavin had a great game in the back row getting to all the break downs first, unfortunately Gav only played for ten minutes of the second half before injury forced his exit, not before he had scored the opening try of the season. Another debutant who made an impact on the game was Roman, Colworth’s answer to Thomas Castaignede, Roman made some great tackles and managed to break the game line on many occasions.  Leo also had a good game but still managed to drop the ball whenever a break seemed on, although he did but the biggest of their players on his arse, which resulted in our second try.

All in all a reasonable performance with more positives than negatives, I think with a full squad we would have run them very close if not beaten them.  The amount of young new lads joining is again promising, and the quality of our training sessions is only going to improve Saturday’s performances.  We have two more friendly’s before our first league match, so lets use these to built some momentum and start the league with a win.

S&C RUFC 43 v 12 St. Neots 3rds

Probably our best performance of the season. Its no coincidence that the forwards got the lions share of the try's with Denver chipping in two for the backs, we kept the ball well rucked and mauled with passion and generally didn't let St Neots see the ball. Jim Cox was excellent around the park and in the line out, Warwick's throwing was spot on and Denver was back to his best. Jim W was kicking penalties for fun from anywhere on the park, Sam was breaking the gain line every time he got the ball and generally the whole team was on top form.

Bedford Ath. 3rds 29 v 3 S&C RUFC

In what was always going to be tough match we put up a good performance, going in at half time only 3-5 down, their better organisation and fitness showed in the end. Playing the Ath always creates its own tension but the fact that the teacher of our younger members was playing for them added a little more edge, it certainly helped swell the playing numbers. I was surprised with our turnout of 20 considering I only had 11 players on the Friday, we are struggling a little at the moments with injuries i.e. Steve Judge (collar bone), Matt Webber (back), Dave Judge (Knee), Damo (Shoulder) Barry Stuart (Big girl's blouse). Again we had a number of new players turnout for us two of whom look like becoming regulars which is good.

Northampton Heathens 48 v S&C RUFC 5

On behalf of Steve Judge and myself (Matt) I would like to say a huge thanks to those of you who turned up for this match, including Will's girlfriends brother and 'Spider' who both answered SOS calls as we only had 13 players available by the Saturday morning!

The match itself was what I can only describe as a real battle as we faced up to a very big, aggressive and extremely well organized Heathens side!

In the first half Heathens dominated in all areas and ran into a significant lead. The great thing was that at no point did we drop our heads, no one was happy to let the game carry on in this manner.

The second half was a different story, as a team we really got stuck into Heathens and had them on the back foot for long periods of play, Leo scored a good try using his pace to full effect and we were unlucky not to pick up further points. Having already lost Warwick and Rob to injury, the game was soured some what when Steve Judge who had played a cracking game was shoulder charged illegally and consequently put out of action!

Heathens had lent us two able subs for our first two injuries but we were now down to 14 players. Despite this further disadvantage and with many of us playing out of position and/ or injured we persevered only conceding a couple of nothing tries at the very end when we were dead on our feet.

Overall a very brave performance from the whole team which can only bode well for the future!

NB: I took Judgy to hospital after the game and he has a terrible break on his collar bone which means the end of his season, so I am sure everyone will join in wishing Steve a prompt and full recovery!

Jon's match report
S&C 67 v 5 Wellingborough 4th

Having lost last week in the final minutes to a strong Swifts 2nd XV this proved a much easier encounter.

Wellingborough turned up with only 12 players, so we had to provide them with 3 of ours, Dave Gibbs hooked, Adrian was put on the wing, and Jamie played centre.

I knew we were in for a good day when from the kick off I made 50 yards without getting tackled - I then put a beautiful pass to the ref, who promptly dropped it.  We didn't move out of the opposition half until we turned round, apart from the restarts.  We were running in tries from all over the field, and Barry Stuart was kicking conversions from touch line to touch line, while Jim W was attempting drop kicks for everywhere – he didn’t get any! All this in a gale force wind and torrential rain, or so our handling indicated; the fact that the sun was shining and the ball was dry didn't stop us dropping everything within 10 yards of their try line.

The second half was slightly tougher. Barry Stuart, Sim Edwards and Steve Judge played for Wellingborough – we were hoping to watch the Judge brothers knock lumps out of each other, but alas they avoided each other like the plague. With Barry now playing for the opposition our kicking ratio dropped and the twenty two yard line was in more danger then the posts, Adrian did his best to remove the need for a lawnmower and Leo swapped his new gloves for a pair of kicking boots, neither were any good.

The overall performance was difficult to judge against weakened visitors, but the fact that we scored 11 tries is pleasing.

TOUR TO SOUTHWOLD,  September 11th 2004

… and what a tour!

15 of us set out on Saturday morning for the beautiful Suffolk coast. Approximately 30 hours later we would return after playing some good rugby, drinking (including ‘whisky & prawn), singing (Elvis was awesome), joking (Jamie ‘my mother in law’& ‘Farmer’ JT stole the show), drinking some more and dancing in varied forms (from Morris dancing to Warwick’s ‘octopus’).

The Rugby

We played two shortened matches, first we played the hosts Southwold in a free flowing encounter. Somehow we managed to dupe the opponents into thinking we were disorganized! However we won the match comfortably 14 – 0.

Next up were Bishop Stortford who made themselves very popular by punching, kicking and moaning there way through the match beating us by one try. Now it was Southwold’s turn to take on the ‘moody blues’, with our support and the efforts of super loan sub Steve Judge (aka. Elvis) they put up a good performance and were moral winners after the match finished in a fist fight!

At the end a few of us stayed on for more punishment in a final match with all three teams mixed together. The wiser heads headed straight to the bar.

The Beer

After the match we joined our hosts and the ever popular moody blues for a complimentary BBQ, a ‘boat race’ which we sort of won, the drinking of a new delicacy ‘whisky and king prawn’ for a selected few (Mr. Stewart decided to eat shell and all!)

Next up was a pub crawl round Southwold with both other teams, from this I remember lots of people (who will rename nameless) trying to pull posh birds, lots of drinking, lots of singing, Morris dancing (think I have found my vocation) and predictably lots of nakedness! The locals were so impressed.

Lowestoft

After saying a very loud ‘Jerusalem’ goodbye to Southwold we headed to the wonderful coastal resort of Lowestoft? Normal people may have seen the fact that the room doors at our ‘Motel’ didn’t lock as a negative but not us. JT & Jamie risked serious fines by dashing off into town straight away while the rest of us befriended the locals. McFly managed to actually play tonsil hockey with 3 girls in one go after gate crashing an 18th Birthday party!

In town things went from bad to worse, Elvis fell in love for the tenth time that day with a bespectacled young lady. Jamie was ‘ejected’ from several bars for being asleep. Call it selective memory but no one else remembers anything after that. For some reason the Police attended our Motel in the early hours after a mix up with the new male receptionist who Denver noticed had some ‘special needs’.

The next day we were all feeling little ill and found the perfect cure in a greasy breakfast and several pints on the way home!

A great time was had by all and believe it or not we have been invited back for the Southwold Beach 7’s Tournament in July.

St. Neots 3rds 12 v 24 S&C

An excellent start to the season with a 24-12 victory over St Neots 3rds, although there were quite a few Swifts players in there too. Denver has started this season in the same form as last with two tries. Barry Stewart opened his account, and new boy Adrian popped up with a typical wingers try. A notable performance from another new boy Leo with some excellent try saving tackles. Dave Judge made an instant impact in the pack as opposed to playing with the pretty boy backs. Johny Larby was, as expected, very useful in the centre, and resembled Charlie Tomkins with his direct style of play. Barry Beever had his best game to date; he managed not to upset either team and stopped the game ten minutes early while we were in front and he was still able to stay in touch with play!

Heathens match report (Northampton Chronicle)

Northampton Heathens 19
Sharnbrook & Colworth 12
Heathens concluded their season in better form than it started with a pleasing win at The Obelisk.
All the first-half points came from Heathens with a try from youthful winger Ryan Richards outflanking the visitors' defence.
A second try came from pacy centre Michael Savage finishing off a well-worked move.
Both scores were converted by stand-off Laurence Knowles, making the score at the break 14-0.
The second half was a different story with a Colworth comeback almost ruining Heathens' afternoon in the sun.
Two tries, one of which was converted, saw the lead whittled down to two points and with 15 minutes to go Heathens had to show their character when their No.8 Gary Bowers was sinbinned for stamping.
With three minutes to go the game was made safe when Knowles picked up a loose 22 drop-out and went over for the team's third try which he was unable to convert making the final score 19-12.

Olney 4ths 39 v 12 S&C

I only just managed to scrape together 15 this week, but what a 15. Barry Stuart returned with new permanent bifocal vision and scored a try. Dave Woodbine continued to persevere with his no passing policy and it finally payed off, ignoring his support he barged the full back out the way to score. Gary Mitchell converted and did a great job at fly-half tackling everything. Dave Gibbs filled in at the last minute at second row in spite of his shoulder injury. Jon Tyrell's entire family came to watch to see what had become of their prodigal son, they went away disappointed. But even better was Mark Taylor played (he wanted to go fishing, I said he could play number 8, I lied, he played second-row)! And he bought a jug thereby guaranteeing future selection. I'm amazed we lost really. If you ask Greg he'll say it was down to Barry Beever's refereeing, but I can't possibly comment.

Enough of this nonsense..
I'm not sure any of this makes sense!!??

Bedford Swifts 2nds 29 v 21 S&C

Our usual slow start put us a couple of scores down and Swifts sensing an easy win. However we started to play with more confidence and got back into the game with a great try by yours truly. Actually me and Sim (sorry, Sim and I) were hanging around after a line out, wondering if play would come back to us or would we have to walk all the way to the other side of the pitch, when Denver made a classic lateral run ending up back with Sim and gave him the ball, Sim passed to Will Kester who got us within a few yards of the line for me to find myself with only the winger to beat (easy) and over for a try!! Denver duly converted and then the rest of the game happened (Denver and Will Kester scored).

Bedford Ath 3rds 40 v 12 S&C

We lost 40-12! Having beaten Ath 3rds earlier in the season they were always going to be out for revenge. With loads of regulars unavailable we borrowed a couple of players. We improved as the game went on having a much better second-half. Our tries came from our guests, the first coming from some fine dribbling by Will Kester down the middle of the park, the Aths defence distracted as Darren Probert discussed some finer points of the law with them (needless to say a non-verbal arguement). Will could have scored it but a guest player snaffled it on the line. I can't remember the second try! However it was good to see another new player, John Wheeler, arrive on the scene. Barry Beever is particularly pleased as he is younger than Dave Woodbine and needs a lift from Kimbolton.

S&C 7 v 17 R&H 2nds

Vice President's day meant a good turn-out, both on and off the pitch. Rushden started quicker and scored all their points in the first half. Denver replied with a typical solo effort beating several tacklers to score under the posts which he duly converted. At half-time we made wholesale changes, to give everyone a game, and Trevor McCarthy (referee) agreed to allow a few of my crooked line out throws. Rushden did cross the line in the second half with a flamboyant and unecessary dive, however the ball spilled and the 'scorer' was judged to have lost control of the ball. In reality I think he was penalised for showing off. Elvis / Sly, an ex-Colworth hooker, had a few jabs at Jon Tyrell and was promptly sin-binned. Sooty was hoping for a Crook v Elvis fight but wasn't too disappointed. Not a bad game and judging by the whoops of laughter from the touchline an entertaining game, though perhaps not in the World Cup final sense.

Oundle 64 v 0 S&C

We lost....Oundle 2nds are a particularly strong side and beat SCRUFC 64-0. Not much more to say, we were particularly attrocious, probably our worst performance of the season! Will Kester put in a good performance at scrum-half, especially as he had never played the position! With lack-lustre support from his forwards and backs getting sucked into rucks and mauls we left holes everywhere for Oundle to exploit. In 'attack' we scrumaged OK, lineout hopeless, no penetration by either forwards or backs. A game best forgotten.

S&C Vets 47 v 5 Cambridge Vets

Billed as a Vets game I couldn't prevent 25 players turning up eager to play! Jon Tyrell and Doris volunteered to play for the opposition bringing their team up to 15. The donation of 2 of our better players, Jon Tyrell even scoring a try for them, didn't prevent a convincing win for SCRUFC.
The first half started briskly, driving runs by Rob Kedwards, Ian Noble and Colin Crook giving plenty of ground and possesion for the backs who, with some simple passing down the line, scored 3 tries in the first 10 minutes, ALL by Steve Judge. At this stage the large contigent of subs had decided who was coming off at half-time. A quieter spell passed........Steve Judge scored another! Denver clearly decided enough was enough, he wasn't to let his top try scorer record slip after all these years, and stopped passing and started running down the left wing, keeping out of SJ's way. He was rewarded with a try. Pete Roberts also scored during this period ghosting through 2 desperate tackles to touch down behind the posts. Jeff kicked lots of points.
All change for the second half with 6? substitutions. Now up the hill against the wind the game was a little more even. It is now that Jon Tyrell scored for Cambridge, otherwise a scrappy half. Pete Roberts went off injured which saw the return of Steve Judge. With the last play of the game forwards and backs linked, Will Kester drew 2 tacklers realeasing........Steve Judge to score his 5th! Needless to say my Man of the Match was James Lawrence.

Renegades 10 v 19 S&C Vets

By the final whistle this game had become a close affair with the Renegades coming back into it. Though officially a vets fixture we had a couple of younger players, including myself. Congratulations to Will, making his debut for S&C at flanker; he was deservedly awarded man of the match. Apart from some 'loose' handling by us I'm informed we looked strong at times; especially in a 'scintillating' spell, just after our half time pep talk, when the whole team seemed to move up a gear in terms of skill and aggression. We  had a 19 point lead, but managed to concede two tries late on, as the rain came down, to a spirited Renegades side determined not to let their Captain down on his birthday.
Afterwards, both teams went for a beer or three at a local public house. All was going well until Barry Beever's presentation speeches, which he followed up with a classic 'party trick'. The pub started to empty soon after so we left on all fours to 'Hi Ho'! A great away day Saturday this one (thanks to Rob Stanton for sponsoring the mini bus!)

S&C 5 v 12 Oundle 2nds

Oundle seconds turned up with 17!!! Hooay!!! But only had 2 front row players Boooo!!!!!! But at least they turned up Hooray!!!!!!! last time they called off at 1.00pm on the day of the game Boooo!!
Anyway as usual we lent a player, Bill Stewart's turn this week and the panto for proper started. As is traditional the lead boy (the referree) was played by a woman, well slap my thigh! It quickly became apparent than many of the traditional laws, such as offside (cries of behind you!) were out the window, apparenty Barry Beever had been grooming her from a young age. A scrappy game ensued and playing the first half up hill we turned round only 5 points down, but for a try saving tackle by Gary Mitchell bundling an Oundle winger into touch over the line it would have been more!. Ofcourse by this time their only prop had gone off injured so we lent them another one (Dave Gibb's turn). Steve Judge had by now got the hang of fullback and at half time suggested he might join the line when we were in possession. This tactical insight led to us scoring in the corner, Aaron Wood laying of a beautifully timed pass for SJ to run onto, a pass made more amazing since he wasn't even looking, a pass straight from the don't tackle me I haven't got the ball approach. Steve just managed to get back on the pitch inside the post to score. A good try appeal distracted the ref from the waving touch judge and the try was awarded. Gary Mitchell missed the conversion, but otherwise had a good game with his ferocious tackling earning him the nickname of Axeman, Oundle seemed to feel he removed too many heads. With all four props now Sharnbrook players Sim got injured. We had Bill back and uncontested scrums ensued. Unfortunately after nearly all the territory and possesion in the second half a break away try left us trailing 12 - 5 and so it remained, Denver was clear for the line at one stage but age and their winger caught up with him, despite the traditional Sharnbrook support...... "go on, all the way".

Denver's match report
S&C 5 v 0 Bedford Ath 3rds

A low score, but by most peoples comments our best and most enjoyable game of the season. Ath hadn't lost a game all season and were determined to keep it that way. Our normal confidence in the dressing room abounded with talk of  "oh they look young, big, fit - we're going to get hammered", etc. However we didn't take this onto the pitch and using the slope and the wind to our advantage we continually knocked on the Aths door but they wouldn't let us in (crap line of the year!). We eventually fashioned an opening with Sim popping the ball to myself and after beating one defender was glad to see their 52 year old winger in front of me and 14 years difference clearly showed as I skipped round him to score in the corner. Totally knackered I barely got the conversion off the ground and didn't look to see if I even made the posts. The second half was always going to be tough defending against the slope and wind, but what an effort from all, especially the forwards. The Ath refused to use their backs and relied on their pack to drive the ball forward but our pack more than matched them and tackled anything that moved, pushed them back in the scrum and generally knocked the stuffing out of them. Frustration told and even when they resulted to stamping, punching and handling on the floor our forwards still more than held their own. So although only five points in it we had the majority of the scoring chances and indeed should have won more convincingly. Doris threw some good punches and had roar of the day after repelling one particular attack. Peter (Jamies student friend!!) was everywhere. Warwick, Sim, Steve, Bill and Paul Stuart were too much for their front row (perhaps cos we had five!). Semtex, Bradley and Benchy pushed and tackled endlessly, the Doc was all the over field and Micky and Browny were extra forwards as well as scrum halves. Dom made numerous breaks (shame we couldn't always catch him up) and the Judges made some great runs, James shorts were too tight, but he did injure their prop and Duncan rolled back the years with a couple of trademark runs. A great way to end our year and here's to the next. Happy Christmas and a very merry new year.

Sharnbrook and Colworth 19 v 0 Renegades

A fantastic game of running rugby end to end stuff, still enough about Edinburgh v Toulouse our game was a drab affair and with the score standing nil nil at half time I feared this could be my second 0-0 in twenty years at Colworth. We managed to rally a bit in the second half playing up hill and after the backs finally managed to pass the ball along the line Steve Judge scored in the corner and I woefully missed the conversion. The ref used Barry's version of the rules and gave several interesting decisions but couldn't stop us scoring a further two tries though myself and Jamie both of which I managed to convert, one cleverly off the post when directly in front. With the game tied up we obviously relaxed and allowed a break from the opposition in their own twenty two. Showing a clean pair of heels to all their centre cruised into our twenty two totally on his own and looked destined to score. Then for some unexplained reason he promptly fell arse over tit and threw the ball forward. The ref had no option but to end the game due to most of the players not being able to stand up due to laughter.

TOUR REPORT

For those who missed it, tour was a great success, with World Cup rugby on each morning in the pub from 8.30 am what could possibly go wrong. Bill Stewart couldn't make the tour but kindly donated the cost of the trip to the beer fund, all those who enjoyed the beer and port on the way down owes Bill a big thank-you, no point in buying him a drink since he is an abstainer. I am loath to write a tour report since you never know who reads these e-mails.......a brief summary could read
  • someone was sick on the bus
  • someone verified a lady's bra size
  • someone fell for the lancaster bomber
  • 2 people scored tries
  • nobody else scored (allegedly)
  • someone went to bed at 9.30pm (bizarre)
  • someone was asked to find another taxi by the police (misunderstood the queueing system)
  • someone drank 7 pints of cider before the game
  • someone wore fake breasts
  • several people got drunk
so pretty standard really.

A BIG THANKYOU TO DAVE BAINES AND THORNBURY RUGBY CLUB FOR HELPING TO MAKE IT SUCH A SUCCESS

Regards, Warwick

Match report
Dunstablians 17 Sharnbrook and Colworth 15

With a much changed side again (players this season - 34 in 5 games!!!!) we really should have won this one. Even the ref said we should have been well ahead at half-time. Despite some valiant drop-goal attempts late on (Denver came over a bit peculiar) the win eluded us. Our tries came from Denver and Damien Pell. Damien could have had more tries but seemed to find running the length of the pitch a bit tiring. Jon Tyrell had his first game at flanker and didn't let his scant knowledge of the laws get in the way of some fine spoiling play. The addition of Matt Webber to the pack gave us some much needed momentum in the loose and is a valuable addition to the side. Jim Wingfield found his boots and put in a sterling display at centre with some fine tackling (bizzarely accompanied by growling.....he's a tiger?).

Ampthill 3rds 21 v 24 S&C

A fine second half display saw a a good victory for S&C after we had slipped to a 14 - 0 score at half time. This wasn't reflective of the game however and we soon replied in the second half after a bit of a mix up from our own scrum created a gap that even I was able to stroll through and score from ten yards, Barry added the afters. Constant pressure was rewarded again and Barry scored after some some good work from the forwards and Browny. With the introduction of some more weight to the pack, Steve Day, we then proceeded to push Ampthill over their line from a scrum. The first time the ref claimed not to have seen Matt Page touch the ball down but there was no denying the second occasion as Browny dived into the scrum to touch the ball down. With two conversion from Barry we were now in a 21 -14 lead and of course took the opportunity to rest on our laurels. With Ampthill only yards from our line Steve Day took the opportunity to fire the ball back to me American Football style through his legs. As the ball flew past my head I gave chase and fumbled the ball a good few times before flicking it up nicely into the hands of an on rushing Ampthill player who gratefully scored from half a yard. Successfully converted we now stood at 21 a piece with minutes remaining. A hack up the field and fine closing down from Dom Hicks resulted in Ampthill being penalised and up stepped Barry "Chipper" Stuart to calmly slot the penalty and thus seal our win. A fine win with Warwick hitting both Doris and Greg in the lineout regularly to give us more ball than normal.

Dunstablians 88 v 14 S&C

A slightly one sided affair but at least both sides had 15. A clever tactic by us to lose heavily to their 3rd team and thus lull their 1st team into a false sense of security for the county cup match!! (I trust we have pulled out). Good to see some old faces amongst our team, Micky Bowyer, Matt Page, I hope they will play again and help to bring on our younger players. Not sure exactly how the score went but we got one in the first half through Mr Tyrell and one in the second half through Doris both converted by myself. Dodgy tackling form all of our team didn't help the cause but we certainly played well in patches and matched them up front if not in general play. The lottery of our own lineout continued and I feel set calls are no longer required. Our finest moment though came in the raffle and Jamie was ecstatic when first we won the Chardonnay and then followed this up with the Liebfraumilch, quality raffling indeed.

Sharnbrook and Colworth 24 v 36 St Neots

In the second match of the new reign (still no actual rain) on the hottest day in September, lending the opposition several players on a rock hard brown pitch....I sense a theme here. Anyway we suffered our first defeat of the season, I feel this had something to do with the opposition being young and able to run plus we lent them some of our best players. A game that fluctuated between 11-14 a side depending on who was off injured at what time we nearly started the second half with less players than them despite us being behind and them having 3 of our players. Not sure who scored as I was of injured most of the time but they went a long way ahead we caught up a bit then they stretched away again, I'm sure Warwick will add the scorers. A couple of memorable moments, the first a Barry Stuart conversion from the touchline and the second the site of Tyrell's knees after the game which closely resembled Bobs faggots prior to being cooked. Shame we had people dropping out at short notice we could have lent them 6 otherwise and surely a victory to either side would have been a win for S&C!!

Pray for rain
